Telecom Update: In a significant development, TRAI has recommended a rules-based service authorization framework to replace the existing licensing framework for telecom services. The recommendation proposes three categories of authorization that will cover almost all telecom services: main service authorization, auxiliary service authorization, and captive service authorization. This proposal is part of broader structural reforms and an overhaul of the regulatory norms under the Telecom Act 2023. The Department of Telecommunications has already issued nine draft rules for public consultation, with more expected to follow.
