While in #Sydney for the #2024GHS conference I was able to talk to my dearest brother Dr. Seye Abimbola. I have been inspired by his work and talks on #DecolonilisingGlobalHealh. I asked him to share 5 skills needed for early career researchers to engage in #DecolonilisingGlobalHealth. Here sharing with you and many others interested in learning from his experience : 1. Be open minded. 2. Be very good at what you do (knowledgeable about your field, know your stuff). 3. Be confident. 4. Have the ability to craft a good peace of argument (being an academic is being a good argumentator, delivering your arguments in a constructive way). 5. Remain playful (be a human being) here the point is don’t take anything personal. Dr. Seye Abimbola is an associate Professor of health system at the University of Sydney School of Public Health. 🌟 Overcoming Challenges: My Journey with Global Health Policy Unit 🌟 When I first started my Master of Public Health at The University of Queensland, I was full of excitement—but also apprehension about adapting to a new education system and life in a new country. Among the many units I enrolled in during my first semester, one stood out for all the wrong reasons: Global Health Policy. Coming from a clinical/medical background, I had zero exposure to politics or policy frameworks. I vividly remember attending the first class of this unit, feeling completely lost in the political language and concepts being discussed. I left that class overwhelmed, convinced it wasn’t my cup of tea. Without hesitation, I ran home and unenrolled the very same day. For the next few semesters, the idea of Global Policy loomed over me as a core unit I had to eventually face. The fear of the unknown lingered—until this semester. With some trepidation, I finally enrolled again in my third semester. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to share that I successfully completed the unit, securing a 7 (High Distinction) in a subject I once dreaded! 🎉 This transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the support and guidance of my incredible professor, Katherine Cullerton, who made the content engaging, accessible, and much less daunting. Her teaching not only built my confidence but also helped me discover a newfound appreciation for global policy and its importance in public health. 💯 This experience taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, the challenges we fear the most are the ones that help us grow the most. 💪 To anyone doubting their abilities—whether in a new country, a new education system, or a completely unfamiliar field—know that it’s okay to take your time, seek support, and keep going. Growth is often found outside our comfort zones. 😁 #MasterOfPublicHealth #GlobalPolicy #Resilience #Growth #PublicHealth #ComfortZone #UQ #StudentJourney

One of the most remarkable experiences of my career! They have expanded the cohort to 8! Check out this program if you are interested in learning how federal health policy is made and implemented!
Applications for the RWJF Health Policy Fellowship Program are now open! The 2025-26 class will expand to eight fellows. Eligible applicants are exceptional mid-career professionals who have also earned an advanced degree - either a masters or doctoral degree. Successful applicants will bring a depth of expertise and knowledge about health, health equity, and the drivers of health to the policymaking process; and will offer an informed perspective on important and complex challenges facing policymakers. The fellowship is comprised of two unique experiences: an immersive orientation period and a hands-on placement working as a senior advisor to an elected or appointed federal government official.
