I recently came across an article from the International Journal of Nursing Studies highlighting the critical role of nursing staff in patient outcomes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research is not new and underscores the longstanding connection between adequate staffing levels and improved patient survival rates, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in providing optimal care to the sickest and most vulnerable individuals. The focus on retention, recruitment, and reimbursement in the nursing profession remains essential. However, attracting younger generations to this profession poses a significant challenge. Despite the hurdles, the need for passionate individuals to join and enrich our profession is more pressing than ever. #Nursing #PatientCare #Healthcare #Covid19 #NursingStaff #HealthcareProfession

In nursing, effective interventions are key to providing holistic and patient-centered care. Here’s a quick breakdown of the three types of interventions: Independent Interventions These are actions initiated by nurses themselves, like patient education and health promotion. Empowering patients starts here. Dependent Interventions These require a doctor's order, such as administering medications. Collaboration with the healthcare team ensures safe and effective care. Collaborative Interventions These involve teamwork with other healthcare professionals, like physical therapists, to provide comprehensive treatment plans. Together, we can enhance patient outcomes. By understanding and utilizing these interventions, we can ensure care is complete and centered around our patients’ needs. Let’s continue to support each other and our patients on their health journeys! #skillsformed #nurses #healthcare

'Those people aren’t smart enough to be trusted...' Last year, at a gathering of fellow nurses, someone directed that statement at me. We were convened to learn how to educate and empower Ohio nurses in shaping state policy and legislation. Amid discussions on tackling the staffing crisis, I delved into the role and potential of Medication Aides (MA-Cs) in Ohio's acute care facilities. A bit of context: In 2006, non-nurses were authorized to administer certain medications in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential care facilities. What began as a pilot program soon expanded statewide by 2009. Yet, since then, progress in reevaluating and expanding the scope of medication aides has stagnated. All that said, the current staffing shortage is much more nuanced than numbers. Its complexities cannot be solved with such a narrow solution. Still, I proposed exploring tangible, quick-turnaround solutions to gauge their impact on acute care. After presenting this idea, I was pulled aside and told “It’s a great idea but won’t work. Those people aren’t smart enough to be trusted with our patients.” Do we assess patients' value based on age or their care setting? This incident showed me we still have a long ways to go in nursing. It shed light on a prevailing mindset for some nurses—a mindset entrenched in outdated paradigms, viewing the world through cracked lenses and taped bridges, desperately clinging to keep them together. It’s time for a new prescription. #nursesonlinkedin #nurseleadership #paradigmshift #nursestaffing #localgovernment #empoweringpeople #solutionfocused American Nurses Association American Organization for Nursing Leadership ANA-OHIO National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Ohio Board of Nursing National League for Nursing American Academy of Nursing National Center for Assisted Living National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards

What's going on with the nursing shortage in 2024? 💡The nursing shortage is a critical issue in healthcare, especially in specialized areas like geriatric and long-term care. With an aging population and increasing demand for quality care, nurses are stretched thin across the country. The gap between supply and demand is projected to grow, impacting patient outcomes and healthcare delivery. Here are some interesting statistics: 📉 We are facing a national shortage of 1.1 million nurses by 2030, with high demand in geriatric and long-term care sectors. ⬆️By 2034, older adults are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history, increasing the need for specialized care. 🏡85% of nursing homes report staffing shortages, which impacts patient safety and quality of care. 💫How can nurses proactively respond?💫 ✅Nurses can upskill and specialize! Geriatric and long-term care certifications can empower nurses to address specific patient needs and advance their careers. ✅Embrace tools that streamline workflows and reduce administrative burdens, so you can focus more on patient care. Let’s work together to fill the gap and ensure better patient care for all. 🤗 #HealthcareLeadership #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation #NursingShortage Source: https://buff.ly/3WoBiwF

I was lucky enough to attend the Nursing & The Law Conference today…. Awesome to hear each speaker coming back to the importance of the nursing voice - nurses are advocates for health in the broadest sense. Whether that be through the patients and communities we serve, contributing to best practice and guiding policy or shaping the future of our profession. Governance can be perceived by some as a non-clinical nursing role, I believe it is a key clinical component of nursing that directly impacts patient outcomes. Nurses of all levels need to look at how they can support nurses in governance from participating yourself, to those in management positions finding ways to incorporate and prioritise staff engagement. As the largest healthcare workforce, our unique experiences and insights need to be amplified. #NursingVoice #NursesInGovernance #SeatAtTheTable #GovernanceIsClinicalWork #ChallenegeTheStatusQuo
