Introducing STACK – Geometry in service of freeform architecture. This October we kicked off the STACK project – a collaboration between SINTEF Digital, DTU - Technical University of Denmark and Zaha Hadid Architects, funded by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) EIC Pathfinder Challenges program. Over the next three years, we will develop an innovative, geometry-driven computational design and digital fabrication solution for freeform architecture that enables efficient practices while preserving the intended architectural expression. We introduce and investigate the concept of stackability of freeform surfaces complemented by 3D elastica theory, and directly apply the results to advanced fabrication methods, such as hot-blade cutting. This new technology aims to positively impact the entire AEC value chain, from design and manufacturing to transportation and construction. Freeform architecture pushes the boundaries of design creativity through complex forms that strive to inspire, bring communities together, and improve quality of life, aligning with the values of the New European Bauhaus for beautiful, inclusive, and sustainable living spaces. STACK is motivated by these values and directly addresses the challenges of the AEC sector. This initiative is led by Konstantinos Gavriil from SINTEF Digital, with David Brander leading from DTU - Technical University of Denmark and Henry David Louth from Zaha Hadid Architects. The rest of the project leadership team consists of Esten Ingar Grøtli, Oliver Barrowclough and Lene Lad Johansen.
