We're devastated to share the news that St Cuthbert's Hospice is announcing the possibility of significant redundancies, meaning the potential reduction of some of our services to make sure our In-Patient beds can remain open. Hospices up and down the country are facing the same financial crisis, with many already forced to take the same drastic action to protect their end-of-life services. We are not alone in reporting soaring pressures due to central government funding not growing in line with inflation. We have seen huge increases in the cost of energy, food and clinical supplies. The upcoming rise in National Insurance has been an unwelcome additional bill while we are already on our knees. Whilst this action has been unbelievably difficult to propose, the long-term future of St Cuthbert’s Hospice is at its heart. This is a deeply unsettling prospect for our dedicated staff and volunteers, and most importantly the countless patients and families who rely on our care. At present all of our services continue to operate as usual. We remain fully committed to providing end of life care to local people, and their loved ones, where and when they need it. Breaks my heart that, in 2024, we've got a trend of hospices struggling to stay afloat. Like how can this be allowed to happen? I really hope you, and many other hospices, can get the funding and support so families are able to lean on you in times of need and comfort. God bless you all.
Hands up all who voted Labour?
Durham MP Mary Kelly Foy has called for the Government to step in and offer real help to hospices after St Cuthbert's Hospice revealed it was facing job cuts and the loss of “vital” care services. The hospice sector knows only to well that without increased funding from the government other hospices may have to make similar, unwanted decisions.
Sending the team lots of strength. You provide such a vital service. The current approach simply doesn't work any more.
This is very sad, its not the first Hospice to be having these problems and it is unlikely to be the last. Clearly the we need #WesStreeting to demonstrate the leadership required and step in now. I have lost the plot on what is a Mission, a Milestone or a Pledge but everyone knows without the quality end of life care provided by Hospices like St Cuthbert’s the Government will not 'Build an NHS fit for the future'. We need all MPS irrespective of political party to speak up now, and #WesStreeting to act.
I support my local hospice every month with a donation and send extra when I can. Instead of sending Christmas cards I have donated extra this month and wished everyone Merry Christmas on Facebook x
So sorry to hear. We have used your services in the past and again more recently. My wife and I donated £100 today and I’ve shared it on social media. I hope more people can help by donating. But the government should be supporting such critical services in the country. Especially palliative care. ❤️💚❤️
Awful to hear this news, hospices play such a vital role in helping to ease the pressure on hospital beds and it feels so short sighted for the Government not to properly fund these organisations. The impact that cutting services will have on those that depend on them in the community will be devastating for those in the most need.
Yet again, once again all we get is soothing words from our health secretary and no action. How many superb staff must hospices lose before government takes action. Shame on ministers
Retired & happy to advice on Supply chain issues
1wWTH , this is unbelievable , appreciate Tories austerity etc put them in a poor state. Labour knew and promised change , bizarre how think can pluck £billions out of nowhere to fund wars, pay train drivers, junior doctors etc but won't help an industry on its arse. I despair of this political system we have now. There is no political will to tackle real issues- build more houses so developers can make more profit. Why not convert existing empty properties be they commercial or domestic?
