Thank you, Dr. Franz MJ Pfister, MD, MBA , Sebastien Ourselin FREng FMedSci and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München for the great organization of the AI Radiology Summit 2024 last week in Munich. A truly international event with really great speakers! The audience: a mix of data scientists, radiologists with an affinity for AI, investors and a few operators. It was a rare opportunity to share experiences 💡My takeaways: 🩻 Very many startups that focus on image analysis struggle with the acceptance of AI by radiology operators. Revenues are still quite low and the road to profitability 💰 is long 🩻 Surprisingly few start-ups really understand or want to understand the dynamics of reimbursement. AI helps optimize workflows (faster diagnosis for physicians), but more importantly, it leads to better outcomes (accuracy of diagnosis) and that should be paid for. 🩻 We have a global shortage of radiologists 👩⚕️. In emerging countries, there are up to ten times fewer radiologists per million inhabitants than in Europe, and the need for imaging is increasing. Artificial intelligence can be a real game changer 🩻 Too few start-ups are focusing on true workflow standardization. The entire image acquisition process should be fully standardized, not just parts of it (e.g. sequences) Looking forward to the event in 2025! Guess what? Rishab Jain & Reyansh Juneja have made it to Cohort 3 of the 18startup fellowship with a 100% scholarship! After conquering 3 challenging stages of the ideathon, they've emerged as the most passionate and enthusiastic entrepreneurs. The journey to securing this opportunity was not a walk in the park. It all started with a quiz only 70% of the participants made it to round 2. Then, in round 2, they had just 20 minutes to come up with a solution to the problem. From there, only 7 people were shortlisted for the final stage, where they had to pitch their proposed solutions in a detailed 1-pager. The panel, consisting of Vivek Manoharan, PhD (CEO of 221B Biomedical) and Prakash Balasubramanian Iyer (CEO of 18startup community), gave everyone an equal scoring opportunity. I wanted to give a special shout-out to Jhanavi and sailahari battula. While they may not have emerged as the winners, I truly appreciate the excellent and insightful ideas they brought to the table. Last Tuesday, at the 21st edition of Founder Talks, which centered on Life Sciences, we had the pleasure of hosting two distinguished entrepreneurs: Rutger Flink from PulmoTech BV and serial entrepreneur Gunnar Flik from Ardena. Gunnar's open and honest discussion about his entrepreneurial journey, including both his triumphs and setbacks, provided valuable insights. The sale of his Dutch research centre Brains On-Line to Charles River Laboratories International in 2017 marked a significant milestone, illustrating the worldwide influence of the company. Gunnar also played an important role in the founding of the LIFE Cooperative in 2014, established by SME entrepreneurs who realised the power of achieving more together than alone. His experiences underscore the idea that learning from failure is as important as celebrating success in business. Rutger Flink shared his own entrepreneurial journey and the launch of PulmoTech. His company is developing a specialised catheter to better regulate ventilation for patients in intensive care. His personal story, outlining the challenges and motivation behind starting a company in this market, was very compelling. 🚀 Day 1 at HiveSchool: A Lesson in the Art of the Elevator Pitch 🚀 Today marked the beginning of Term 0 at HiveSchool, and let me tell you, it started with a bang! 🎉 Our incredible founder and mentor, Nikhil, didn’t waste a moment. On the very first day, he challenged us with a task that every entrepreneur dreams of mastering—the Elevator Pitch. 🗣️ Now, I’ve heard about elevator pitches in the context of shows like Sharktank but doing one on day one of a cohort? That’s something else. But here’s the genius behind it: It’s HiveSchool’s way of teaching us how to introduce ourselves to VCs in a way that stands out. We were divided into groups of three, and within just 6 minutes, we had to craft a 90-second pitch for our imaginary SaaS startup. No time to overthink, just focus, strategize, and deliver. 🎯 What I learned in those intense 6-8 minutes is that if you want to be in that top 1%, you need to be quick, precise, and confident. There’s no time to hesitate—just line up your thoughts and shoot straight. And let me tell you, I’m obsessed with Nikhil Gaur’s energy. The passion he’s putting into teaching and building HiveSchool is extraordinary.
