So, this is more of a niche post but it's pretty interesting to me. I come across this particular AI overview on Reddit which I found pretty funny... and curious. I won't go into too much detail as I can easily get lost in a tangent when talking about Elden Ring, a game I absolutely adore. The first boss of the game, called the Soldier of Godrick, is comically easy and feels out of place for a game as punishingly difficult as Elden Ring. This boss is so simple that it has become a joke within the online community. The joke is prevalent in places like Reddit where users "boast" about finally beating this boss. But as we can see with this example, the AI overview isn't able to understand the joke. For the query "best boss in elden ring", The Soldier of Godrick is brought up as "the most challenging and fun fight in the game" (something the subreddit found hilarious). I've taken a couple of lessons from this silly example. 1) AI still isn't great and determining subtext. It can't understand the sarcasm and irony of the content it scrapes which could lead to serious misinformation. 2) While Reddit is a great source for honest opinions, it probably isn't the best place to find facts. Redditors love their inside jokes, hostility to outsiders and anti-establishment sentiment. So, if AI Overviews continue to draw upon Reddit as a source, then we can expect bizarre AI responses for years to come. #aioverviews #reddit #seo

Reddit, Inc. co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman has been living in a whirlwind of activity the past few weeks. He is about to be a new dad. And before that, he is now officially a CEO of a public company that he helped co-found with Alexis Ohanian Sr. in 2005. Steve told me on Yahoo Finance down at the NYSE there are three "chapters" to Reddit that investors should pay attention to: the company's ad business, user economy, and then its data. The data component is especially important to the investment thesis. Reddit's data has been of particular interest to investors, given its potential to be used in large language models that form the basis for generative AI programs. On that, Huffman points to all the conversations that have occurred on Reddit, saying that "in an AI world, where everything is increasingly written by AIs, the human-generated content actually becomes more valuable over time. We're starting to see that the best response to artificial intelligence is actual intelligence." Recently, Reddit secured a lucrative deal with Google to give it access to its user convos to help train large language models. More deals could be in the cards. Full watch ⬇

Reddit might be trying to compete with Google (and ChatGPT, and Perplexity…) They announced this morning that they’re testing a new generative AI chatbot called Reddit Answers, which allows people to ask questions and receive curated summaries of relevant responses and threads across the platform. This comes after Google added the functionality to search Reddit since so many people were adding the keyword “reddit” to their search queries. Also, since ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI chatbots ingest Reddit posts and surface them as answers there, it makes sense that Reddit would want to keep users on their own platform. We’ve already seen some media companies introduce gen AI search on their own sites to display their own content, and there will doubtless be more who follow. It still might be a tough sell to have people search individual sites instead of going to a centralized place to find answers. We’ll see if Reddit – with its size and strong community – can pull it off.

Reddit is going to gain even more Search market share! Let's dig into it... Reddit launches AI Answers for Search to "Find answers from real people." Seems like now people might decrease the "Search + Reddit" in Google and just go right to the source doesn't it. (Dropping article source from Entrepreneur Magazine Attached an example from The Verge brought to my attention by Ewen Finser Remember, Google and OpenAI have already signed deals to use Reddit data in their AI responses. So while this seems like a direct competition, they are also incentivized by the conversations built in Reddit. Currently only available in Beta to limited members in the US but watch out, this is BIG. --- What do you think of this new product for Reddit???? Will you use Reddit answers, let me know in comments! #reddit #searchads #digitaladvertising #marketingtrends #newaiproduct

Reddit may be one of the last bastions of real human threads: humans giving advice to and having unvarnished conversations with other humans. Reddit's IPO recognizes this value. But, Reddit may sell out to AI as it chases more revenue. Reddit's 18 years of unadulterated human input data on a wide range of topics and categories in and of itself is a gold mine. It's rare to find a site left with humans alone. The search engines' results now are full of AI iterations, chatbots, and "SEO chum". Most sites have an AI bot pegging, sorting, and directing your scroll. In the future as bot assistants become ubiquitous that data generated will be less than 1% human. The value of Reddit is it's human communities with it's raw human inputs. It sustains these communities with humans giving voice to issues. You can verify news, information; not just the usual greasy comb over of the various news sites combined with their AI models that's been trained with big brother policies. Pure human input data is gold. It will be interesting to see how Reddit navigates forward. Graph sources: Yahoo Finance #AI Reddit, Inc. #ipo #data

Reddit VP of Business Development Jonathan Flesher is here at the 25th Online News Association conference to talk more about the summarization of content. Not that long ago, Reddit signed a partnership deal with Google, letting it train its AI models on Reddit data. This essentially means that Reddit content will show up for people whenever they are looking for specific answers on, let's say, Gemini. For publishers like us, the summarization of content is scary and threatening since readers' attention span is further declining, people want easy accessible information and opt-in for short format content like YouTube shorts, TikTok videos, and AI-generated answers. However, Flesher isn't sounding alarm bells and feels quite positive. If everyone would opt-in for AI answers only, this would lead to publishing businesses collapse worldwide. That, in turn, would mean no new content is being generated, and Google & Co would have nothing to train their AI models on. They would be outdated and of no use to readers anymore. So, as long as you are publishing new and timely content, always innovating, you should be fine. How do we, as publishers, adapt our business models to this new scary reality, is another question. #ona2024 #publishing #reddit #AI
