Do you know around one billion tyres reach the end of their useful service life every year, according to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)’s Tire Industry Project. What can we do? Embracing #circulareconomy principles allow to reimagine end-of-life tyres (ELTs) as a valuable resource, and use the same as raw materials in existing tyre production systems. What we are doing? A big shout to our Bridgestone EMEA Sustainability, R&D and procurement teams in setting up this close-loop ecosystem to transform ELTS, through pyrolysis, into tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) to create high-quality synthetic rubber vs traditional fossil based synthetic rubber. What we want to achieve? As part of the ecosystem, all three companies will be working together to research and realise the best technical solutions to establish a successful ecosystem for future recycling of end-of-life tyres on a large scale. #Bridgestone set a goal to achieve 100% sustainable materials by 2050, with reduce, reuse, and #recycling being key. This ecosystem partnership with Grupo BB&G and Versalis will help us reach this target. This effort also aligns with Bridgestone's E8 commitment and our global #EVERTIRE initiative, aimed at finding eco-friendly solutions to extend tyre life.
Today we’re announcing the start of a new chapter in our work to reduce tyre waste. We’re launching a new collaboration with Grupo BB&G and Versalis to establish a closed-loop ecosystem to transform end-of-life tyres into new tyres. The collaboration will see ELTs transformed into tyre pyrolysis oil, which will be used to create high-quality elastomers for the production of new tyres.
