SHUN NEW EDUCATION POLITICS, FOCUS ON NEW EDUCATION PRACTICES (NEP) Why is China on a sharp growth trajectory? Chinese universities rank among world's top fifteen! yet they don't shout from rooftops about their achievements and they do not magnify their meagere success into a mammoth accomplishment, instead they eye on teaching, research and their applications in problem solving. https://lnkd.in/gric9hK6

It is interesting to see the parallels between the country where I am currently working - Malaysia, and how higher education priorities, agendas and trends are now focusing along the Asia route. With a focus on - universities within regions of a large country like China. I like to think that knowing the changing waves of key trends and events and how they impact the identification and prioritisation of research expertise in higher education in China will be a good place to start a discourse and gain in-depth insights. Research op-ed piece writers, will this idea be doable? 😄 #universities #discourse #waves #highereducation #trends #education #China #WEF #TimesHigherEd #Asia

Competition exists in every society, but its nature transforms dramatically when scaled to encompass millions of people under centralized systems. Modern China presents a striking example of this phenomenon, where 293 million students and 18.8 million teachers operate within a unified educational framework. This massive scale creates an environment where small advantages multiply into life-changing differences, driving behaviors that often work against the system’s intended outcomes. While competition can drive innovation and self-improvement, its effects in large-scale systems often become counterproductive. Centralized frameworks amplify competition, creating pressures that push individuals to pursue external validation rather than personal growth. This tendency is not limited to education but extends into broader societal experiments where centralized policies often generate unintended consequences. The roots of this phenomenon can be traced to China’s 科挙 (keju), the Imperial Examination system, which shaped not only educational competition but also the psychological, cultural, and political nature of governance in East Asia. Instituted during the Sui Dynasty and formalized during the Tang and Song Dynasties, the keju system created a framework in which individual success was tied to mastery of Confucian classics, leading to social mobility for a select few. However, it also instilled values of centralized control and hierarchical competition, which continue to influence societies today. #EducationReform #CulturalLegacy #EmpowermentOverPressure #SystemicChange #AspirationToEmpowerment https://lnkd.in/gsKr6KQD
