Accent Group Limited has announced exclusive distribution deals for Dickies® and Lacoste in Australia and New Zealand, set to begin in 2025. I felt nostalgic to read that 70% of stand-alone Sass & Bide boutiques would be closed (they are currently owned by Myer). A Gen-Zer would *cringe* at my awe of owning a pair of Sass and Bide jeans when I was in my teens and patiently waiting for the warehouse sales to score a pair. It made me think about trends in consumer retail spending and how hard it is for fashion brands to compete long-term. Consumer spending volumes on clothing and footwear were ~4% of total spending in 1960 and had a long-term decline to ~2% in 2000 but started rising again since and basically back to their 4% level now. I was surprised to see this pick-up over the last 20 odd years. I thought it would have shown more of a long-term decline. In current $ terms the trend for clothing and footwear is firmly down, because of the impacts of inflation. So consumers are still spending on fashion, just maybe not the fashion I wanted 20 years ago!

Maloney has over 19 years of experience leading high-profile global businesses. Nordstrom, Inc., posted strong Q3 fiscal 2024 results, with net sales up by 4.6% year-over-year to US $ 3.46 billion and GMV rising by 5.3%. Digital sales, which accounted for 34% of total revenue, grew 6.4%, though the Anniversary Sale’s timing shift trimmed sales by 100 basis points. Women’s clothing and activewear saw double-digit growth, while footwear and children’s apparel achieved mid- to high-single-digit gains. Nordstrom Rack sales surged by 10.6% year-over-year, highlighting its robust performance. VF Corporation CEO Bracken Darrell said they are on track to deliver cost savings and return to growth after recently reporting an operating loss of $240 million for the 3 months ending June 2024. When VF Corporation purchased Supreme back in 2020 everyone from business analysists to die hard streetwear fans could see the massive potential of the sale. Sitting alongside other iconic streetwear brands such as Vans, Timberland & The North Face, which Supreme had already collaborated with on numerous occasions. However, 4 years later and the move didn’t meet VF’s original expectations with a falling demand for Supreme’s red box logo and shares prices in VF dropping 13%. After negotiating a sale with EssilorLuxottica For $1.5 Billion, VF shares were up by 14% but there’s sill a long way to, it seems, for the US based apparel & footwear company to return to growth. Here's something that most people won't have thought about: why shoe retailers only sell shoes in pairs. Paralympian Stef Reid who is a single leg blade runner has asked brands such as Nike, Decathlon UK and Brooks Running why, when some of their mannequins have a blade, so they clearly understand the diversity of sportspeople, they only sell footwear in pairs. Nike currently run the One Shoe Bank project in the USA, and Brooks refer to some of their retail partners who offer a single shoe service but, as Stef says "My perfect outcome is we would just transform the way the shoe industry operates and we would be able to buy shoes specifically for each foot," she said."
