I am so proud to represent the USA at the 2024 Adaptive CrossFit Games in San Antonia, Texas. I could not be more proud to be here for this moment in history, as it is the first year there will be a vision division. I am currently ranked 8th in the world, and I know I could not have done it without my coach, Tom McCauley, and all the support from all the coaches at CrossFit Shapesmiths. There is more information on how to watch and follow the linked blog. Below are a few things I wish were better understood about disability in sports. Adapted, not scaled . We are not asking for a lower standard. We are asking for appropriate adaptations, tools and technology to enable us to achieve the same standard of difficulty in strength and skills. I don’t believe that my competitors or myself are any less capable of pushing the boundaries of human potential as able bodied athletes. Enable independence . If someone makes assumptions about what I am capable of and intervenes or solves problems for me — especially without asking — then I miss an opportunity to develop and affirm my independence. I am happy to ask for help if I need, and if I don’t ask, it is likely because I have a plan for myself and I am happy to struggle with a challenge if the end result is increased independence. It is okay to ask someone IF they would like help — and HOW they want to be helped — but this has to be their decision. If someone takes over for me or another person with disabilities, it can create a state of learned helplessness and further exacerbate the dis/ability divide. Competition, not participation. Our divisions may be small at present, but at the top end, the standard is exceptionally high, and the size and standard will only increase as adaptive sport becomes more mainstream. I am entering this competition fully expecting to be humbled and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I am competing, not participating, and this is how the sport grows. It’s a two way learning experience. When coaches ask me what help I need whilst we are learning something new, it is often the case that I also don’t know what that help looks like. We work together and try things out, drawing on my lived experience plus their professional experience until we find a way through. What we never do is try something once, fail and walk away. In the past year I have learned tons of new skills I had no idea a blind person could do, but it required persistence, flexibility, and a willingness to fail and try again. It has been a collaborative process with learning on both sides.
