#Leadership #NHSLeadership Another great succinct article about what STILL needs to happen within the NHS if we are to truly become a more effective organization: What we know: 🙌 Good Clinical leadership ➡ High performance ➡ 🙆♀️ Higher staff satisfaction ➡ 👨👨👧👦 Better patient outcomes BUT: - ⏳ Lack of time for clinical leaders to do leadership work so all they have time to do is put out 🔥 s and respond to complaints. We are forced to be REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE. We need to allocate the appropriate TIME. - ☝ Staff can rise to management level without clear understanding or support on how to handle them. We need to invest in SKILL DEVELOPMENT. - 👥 Recognition may also be a problem: instead of enjoying higher esteem, medical managers may be seen as having gone to the “dark side. We should CHANGE PERCEPTION of management vs leadership. - 🤓 Leadership development remains uncoordinated and inconsistent (and) resident doctors may find they are not enabled to use their skills after participating. We need SYSTEMS THINKING. SO WHAT SHOULD WE DO? - ⏲ 🤲 Medical leaders need protected time and support if they are to excel in their roles, and to avoid frustration and poor professional satisfaction. - 💷 Staff in leadership positions also need an appropriate financial reward scheme. Overall, whilst "The new government, (supported by Darzi’s recommendations,) must commit to recognising, valuing, and supporting the role of doctors in a modern, multidisciplinary approach to NHS management and leadership, I think every one of us should also take responsibility in this journey for a #strongerNHS and more #compassionateleadership. #embracechange 😇 We are all responsible for setting cultures #leadbyexample. Just because 'this is always the way we have done it' it does not make it right! Many thanks to Rachel Hoey for flagging this to me 🙏 https://lnkd.in/ePMUzuuv

I often see healthcare leaders get stuck in a "business" mindset amidst the stress that sometimes comes with the job, but it's essential that they don't forget along the way to prioritize patient care and staff well-being through active listening, balanced decision-making, and nurturing strong teams. By leading with this human-centric mindset, healthcare leaders can create patient-centered practices with high staff morale, ultimately leading to a more positive and sustainable healthcare experience for everyone. Healthcare isn't just about the business—it's about the people. #Healthcare #Leadership #HealthcareLeadership

Do you ever feel like driving on rugged terrain without a map? Many clinicians share this sentiment when it comes to leadership in healthcare. Despite our expertise in medicine and healing, stepping into a leadership role often feels like entering uncharted territory. I have witnessed how this gap can limit our ability to drive positive, patient-centered change. Leadership goes beyond making tough decisions; It's about igniting inspiration, fostering innovation, and, above all, prioritizing patients' needs. Throughout my experiences in healthcare, I have seen the incredible transformation that occurs when doctors, nurses, and all healthcare professionals possess strong leadership skills. It's not just about administrative tasks; It's about advocating for better patient care, embracing innovative practices, and leading compassionately. If we prioritize leadership development, we can unlock new opportunities to improve patient outcomes and care. The real question is, how can we offer better support and cultivate these vital skills within our healthcare environments? I want to hear your thoughts and experiences on fostering leadership in healthcare. Together, we can truly make a difference. What are your thoughts?

I found this a really timely and useful long read from The Health Foundation on how to strengthen clinical leadership and management, an important means of helping the NHS to improve quality outcomes and boost operational productivity and efficiency. As the team show, evidence suggests clinical leadership and management are associated with high organisational performance and can bring a variety of benefits for leadership and organisational decision making. Although this also makes it clear it should be seen within a wider context of interventions as part of a multifaceted improvement strategy. Lessons to learn from elsewhere include more visible backing for management, parity of esteem for managers from different backgrounds, improved processes for recruitment and talent management, and a better training and development offer. Really worth a full read. All so important for the reasons outlined, and also because the absence of these can also make a significant personal impact on the people taking on these roles. I'd add too, it's important in ref to supporting the pipeline of talent and expertise to board level. https://lnkd.in/esn5gNJD

In healthcare, better patient care depends on everyone taking responsibility. Clear roles and a system where team members have clear responsibilities help improve outcomes.
