You’re successful in scaling your tech company, but the price feels too high. This thought experiment might reveal what’s missing. Last week, we set up the stage for a thought experiment. If you missed it, you can find the link to Part 1 in the comments. Now, we’re going to explore our choices. The Hard Choice: Transform Your Leadership Imagine you stop being an enforcer and start being an enabler. Instead of micromanaging, you provide the strategy. Instead of specifying every detail, you focus on the bigger goals. You've been pushing your team too hard, specifying features down to the smallest detail, setting deadlines, and chasing people to meet them. You’ve helped unblock issues, coded alongside them, and improved processes. Despite all this effort, you’re still stuck. Your solution? More hard work. But what if you let go of this command-and-control approach? What if you allow your team to find the best ways to achieve goals on their own? The Foundation: Building Quality In You can’t have a successful product without quality. Forget the notion that technical debt is like a loan you can repay later. Architecture and design matter. Tests aren’t just a maintenance burden; they’re essential. Encourage your teams to build quality from the start. Teach them to test-drive their software and create designs resistant to implementation details. What’s Next? Comment below and stay tuned for next week’s post, where we’ll explore this thought experiment further. Let’s see how it unfolds. - Having trouble delivering high-quality software on time? Let’s talk :) #SoftwareEngineering #EngineeringOrganization #ScaleUp

In a fast-moving tech company, a team of developers oversees four crucial pillars to keep the organization thriving. Firstly, there's #KTBR (Keep The Business Running), essential for ensuring smooth operations. This includes daily tasks like bug fixes, updates, and routine checks—vital for the company's survival. Next, they focus on #NewThings, where creativity meets strategy. This involves developing innovative products aligned with business goals, driving growth and capturing market attention. The third pillar, #Improvements, emphasizes refining existing features for enhanced performance, reliability, and security, ensuring the company remains competitive. Lastly, #Productivity aims to enhance team efficiency and overall productivity through streamlined processes and tools. Balancing these pillars is challenging yet crucial for success, as they collectively uphold stability, drive growth, maintain excellence, and foster efficiency in a competitive tech landscape. The future is in more holistic reasoning about cloud deployments. Application, as a collection of services and workloads, that comprise a holistic business purpose, will affect all aspects of operating a business on cloud - load balancing, autoscaling, cost and capacity management, quotas etc. The future will be Application centric. Come and check out this session. I cannot wait to see it and hear what the team is launching.
Platform engineering is the foundation for innovation, but building a great platform is no easy feat. We often get caught in the weeds, focusing on features instead of the developer experience. Find out how shifting the mindset to an application-centric approach empowers developers. Join us at Google NEXT '24 as Dan Nater, Deepak Mani, Srinivas Krishnan and I speak about the future of platform engineering. Sign up below to join our session 👇🏼
