I learned the most wonderful new (to me) word last weekend: mudita. Mudita, which comes from Tali and Sanskrit, refers to “sympathetic joy, or joy at the happiness of others.” There isn’t really a direct translation into English. As a word, this delights me as much “schadenfreude,” which I learned 25 years ago. Schadenfreude is pretty much mudita’s dark side antonym. It refers to joy in the misery and misfortune of others—and is a more entertaining but probably less worthy thing to practice. Fundraising is competitive and can feel like a zero sum game (my competitor got that big grant so I didn’t). Schadenfreude when we hear that a competitor has failed is easy; when we experience mudita hearing of a peer’s success, that’s a much kinder place to be. After all, in our field we are all trying to boost the impact of people who are making the world a better place. Did you know “mudita” already? Here are 3 of the biggest lessons I learned as a #nonprofitwebsitebuilder & weaving words as a #nonprofitcopywriter for the superheroes: (You might be surprised by some of them) 1️⃣ Your vision matters more than your words You know those Creative Directors who can write like Shakespeare on steroids? Yeah, they're out there. But your magic lies in steering them toward the perfect vision. If your ideas can serve as killer copy, even better. That's just icing on the cake. 2️⃣ Clarity always comes 1st, creativity 2nd Sure, you've got a treasure trove of out-of-this-world ideas. Most super-creative ideas you have won’t fly. But reality check: not all of them will soar. It's about guiding and charming your donors & community members. Making them nod in understanding. Because if your message is "Rock Unclear", all that creativity fizzles out like a damp firework. 3️⃣ You have to be great at “pitching your ideas” “Please see attached the final draft” is a no-go. Sometimes, your message itself isn’t enough to see the full picture. It needs a little extra sparkle —a dash of backstory to truly shine. Explain the vision behind your genius messages as you deliver them. It took me (literal) years to master these 3 nuggets of wisdom. So I hope this post little nugget of wisdom saves you some serious clock ticks. 👊 Go forth and Impact, NPO buffs!

Confession time: When I first started as Director at the European Journalism Centre, I had no idea how to fundraise. I had to raise over a million euros, with only 30% of what I needed for my first year already secured. No list, no roadmap, no system, just a mess of grant databases and deadlines. Then I realised—fundraising is just a process game. That's when I built a very simple fundraising engine with the following: 🧠 A database to store funder feedback 🕸️ A framework to structure my search 🎯 Prioritisation criteria to focus on the best opportunities 📆 A tracker to stay on top of deadlines 🤝 An engagement plan to build long-term relationships It saved me time, reduced my FOMO, and eventually secured me the money I needed. Everyone starts somewhere. If you're fundraising for the first time, don't panic. The best way through the overwhelm is a structured approach.
