This week, the new legislative period of the #EuropeanParliament, scheduled to run until 2029, begins. We call on MEPs to end the policy of letting people die in the #Mediterranean! Our in-depth report, ‘Humanity Overboard’, paints a stark picture of the situation on the Mediterranean. It demonstrates via rescue data, a survey from on board Humanity 1 and testimonies of survivors how the EU and its member states are obstructing search and rescue and depriving refugees of their human rights. The EU needs to change course – urgently. Read the full report, including concrete details of our four key demands to the members of the new European Parliament, here: https://lnkd.in/gM5gQ8uw

How EU is constantly violating human rights and has thrown basic humanity over board in the last years. This report is a must read!
In anticipation of #WorldRefugeeDay tomorrow, we are excited to launch our new report ‘Humanity Overboard’! The extensive report shows how the #EU is obstructing search and rescue in the #Mediterranean, and depriving refugees of their human rights. It analyses all of Humanity 1’s rescue operations between September 2022 and March 2024 in a legal and political framework, showing how human rights and basic humanity have been thrown overboard. We also showcase testimonies and feedback from survivors themselves, including a survey carried out on board shedding light on how and why people flee across the Mediterranean. Read the full analysis – and our demands to EU member states for a change of course: https://lnkd.in/ejjWBzk7

Migrants can quickly become scapegoats for social and economic decline, crime and unemployment, pressure on health and welfare services and lack of security. That's why media plays a crucial role in the definition of the narratives around migration. ❗ Individuals and outlets reporting on migration can engage with their audience to help others better understand the complexities of migration by applying ethical principles, avoiding stereotypes and developing good newsroom practices. 💡 📰 Media may also reach decision makers, which means it holds the power to significantly impact not just policy, but peoples’ lives.
Narratives that pit us against each other & scapegoat migrants & refugees are manipulation tactics used to perpetuate fear & deflect from the root of societal issues. We must see through these politics of distraction & #StandUp4Migrants, because human rights create abundance- for everyone. We all have a role to play in building social cohesion: https://lnkd.in/eBcer8BR

Super Friday! Today, the #CJEU has delivered 3 landmark judgments with important consequences for EU asylum policies: 1) Women and girls in Afghanistan are at risk of gender-based persecution and must be protected: https://lnkd.in/euGGQUeS. In its reasoning, the Court made direct reference to #UNHCR's observations on this case: https://lnkd.in/em4vKjxW. 2) National authorities cannot designate countries of origin as safe only for some parts of the territory: https://lnkd.in/e6t9Kt6a. 3) Third countries that do not readmit asylum-seekers on their territory can be designated as safe. BUT Member States cannot adopt inadmissibility decisions on individual asylum applications, if that country will not in fact readmit them: https://lnkd.in/epmiKGJ3. #AfghanWomen #SafeCountryofOrigin #EUTurkeyDeal

Today is International Human Rights Day. One of the fundamental human rights is the right to asylum, clearly stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Art.14 "Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution." Yet, today, the principles of human rights are under attack globally: Human rights violations are happening and emerging every day, including in places like Palestine, Syria, and my own mother country. People are being denied safety, dignity, and basic freedoms. In Poland a new regulation extending the "buffer zone" for another 90 days has come into force. Nothing has changed: the same rules, the same territory, even the same errors in place names. Humanitarian aid remains heavily restricted, unmonitored forces act with impunity, and those seeking safety are left vulnerable – often facing violence at the hands of those who should protect them. A draft bill proposing the suspension of the right to asylum has been unveiled, and it’s worse than feared. It blatantly violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Though this day is supposed to be celebrated as a triumph of human rights, it is really hard to feel joy connected to it with everything that is happening. What we can do is stand in solidarity. Support the activists providing aid at the border:[https://lnkd.in/dYng-bqS]. Let’s amplify their efforts, raise awareness, and fight for the rights and dignity of every human being, everywhere in the world. #HumanRightsDay #RightToAsylum

🚨TOMORROW, the European Parliament will vote on the EU's harmful New Pact on Migration and Asylum. TODAY, 161 Civil Society Organisations call on MEPs to #StopThisPact and vote to REJECT the files. Read our statement for more 👇 https://lnkd.in/dpVD2jgf Instead of encouraging solidarity between Member States, the Pact prioritises swift returns to "safe third countries" and sees funding of third countries as a form of solidarity. Recent deals like those between the EU and Egypt, Tunisia, Mauritania and soon Lebanon will proliferate as a way to "manage migration". This is NOT the answer. Civil society calls on MEPs to #StopThisPact For more on externalisation in the Pact ↙️ By EuroMed Rights 👉 https://lnkd.in/eaC92fdq By European Policy Centre 👉 https://lnkd.in/eC97hKZV

The both Global North and Global South are moving towards what I cal "refugee apartheid." However, discrimination with refugees based on religion, ethinicity and language is not a new phenomenon. But It certainly challeges the so called neutrality of international law. An interesting blog by Jasmin Lilian Diab
The official Linkedin page for the Border Criminologies research network at the University of Oxford.
[New Blog 🖊️] Dr. Jasmin Lilian Diab exposes how racial hierarchisation—viewing European lives as inherently more valuable than non-Europeans—manifests in the EU's paradoxical standards: regions deemed unsafe for EU citizens are considered 'safe' for refugees.
