Here's how most B2B teams use intent data: See account with intent → add to cold outreach list and launch the campaign Here's what to do instead: The biggest problems with intent data: • Intent data ≠ intent. You need to understand the actual intent behind the data • No clear process for tracking, qualifying, and leveraging it. Here is how to make sure you get the maximum out of intent data that is already available for you. 1. DEFINE THE KEY SOURCES Don't be obsessed with multiple sources. Start with a single source ("first party" - your own intent data), develop a playbook, and add other sources gradually. 2. DEFINE ONE RESPONSIBLE PERSON Avoid joint tracking. Make sure you have one person who is in charge of: - Tracking the data - Qualifying insights - Sourcing the data with collected insights to the right team members 3. DEFINE TRACKING FREQUENCY Not all intent triggers are created equal. High intent (e.g. a company checked high intent pages like pricing, product, book a demo...) should be tracked daily, while e.g. search intent can be tracked on a weekly basis. Timely follow-ups are crucial. 4. RUN ACCOUNT AND BUYER RESEARCH Run research to understand the intent behind the data, and start hypothesizing. 5. MAP THE VALUE PROPOSITION Start mapping the value proposition and content to what you've discovered in research. 6. ENGAGE The number one reason buyers ignore your outreach or ads? Because they don't know the 'sender'. Engage meaningfully before reaching out. 7. DISTRIBUTE There are many ways to distribute your personalized value proposition and content: direct mail, paid distribution, content hubs, 1:Few events, social selling, follow-up calls... Don't send one message and expect miracles. 8. NURTURE Whatever the quality of your data is, the majority of buyers will not yet be ready to speak with sales. Keep engaging and nurturing. --- Most of your competitors have access to the same data as you. There are three key ways to stand out: 1. Do research and be more relevant 2. Engage and warm-up before reaching out 3. Keep on nurturing And this requires sales and marketing alignment on a clear process and responsibilities. Throwing accounts over the wall is not the way to do it.
