To SaaS CFOs: How do you view R&D spend in the context of unit economics? Customer Success (retention focused) = CoGs/cost of servicing and retaining existing customers Sales & Marketing = OpEx/cost of acquiring new customers + expanding existing customers R&D = cost of retaining and expanding existing customers + acquiring new customers over the longterm? I wouldn't categorize R&D under CAC, but I'm aiming to develop a framework that measured ROI similarly to CAC. I see CS, Sales, and Marketing as key drivers of unit economics in the short term, whereas R&D influences unit economics significantly, albeit over the long term. While it can't be attributed the same way as CAC and GM, its impact is undeniable. Thoughts? #SaaS #Finance #Metrics #Startups #Founders

Regular pricing changes are a good thing and important - but they tend to distort your Net Dollar Retention 👇 If you do a price increase for both new and existing customers, you can expect the following two things to happen: 1. New MRR goes up because you continue to acquire a similar amount of clients which are now going to pay a higher price. 2. Expansion Revenue also goes up because existing clients start to pay higher prices, usually in tranches with the start of their next billing cycle. New MRR does not influence Net Dollar Retention, but Expansion Revenue does: Net Dollar Retention = (Starting MRR + Expansion - Churn - Downgrades) / Starting MRR NRR will likely remain elevated for a while after the increase - unless extreme price hikes lead to much higher churn. But this NRR boost tends to reverse after full migration to the new pricing structure. Though this creates attractive short-term metrics you can report to your investors, it risks compromising sustainable, authentic growth. For a clearer picture, I recommend tracking retention metrics across monthly cohorts. #saas #startup #pricing #kpi #vc #investors #retention
