As we celebrate Tourism Month this September, it's important to recognise the vital role that the events industry plays within the broader tourism sector. “From conferences and exhibitions to festivals and corporate gatherings, events are not just about bringing people together – they are powerful drivers of economic growth, cultural exchange, and community development,” says EGF chairperson John Arvanitakis. In South Africa alone, the MICE industry contributed R2 billion to the national economy in 2023 attracting international visitors and boosting local businesses in the hospitality, transport, and retail industries. However, with this influence comes the responsibility to lead by example in addressing the environmental impact that also comes with eventing. “At the EGF, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices that minimise waste, reduce carbon footprints, and prioritise local sourcing. By doing so, we not only meet the growing demand for eco-conscious events but also highlight Africa's leadership and ingenuity in sustainable tourism,” Arvanitakis explains. #TourismMonth #EventGreening #SustainableTourism #MICEIndustry #EGF #GreenEvents #ResponsibleTravel

Culture presents unique opportunity to enrich the travel experience and lives of tourists. Yet, it presents an equally fluid landscape that needs to be carefully negotiated to achieve the promise of enriching travel and life experiences. Africa's culture has long been misunderstood and misrepresented and thus leading to certain cultural misconceptions, stereotypes of the continent and its people that shape the travel expectations of tourists. In the current dispensation of global cultural hegemony dominated by western cultural ideals, how do Western tourists perceive African culture and adjust to the cultural expectations in Africa? This freshly minted paper discusses these issues from the perspectives of Western tourists who have visited Africa.
