🏗️ Laying the Foundations 🏗️ I often feel there are top-level themes playing at different moments in my life. Right now, I'm in a phase I'm calling "Laying the Foundations". 📊 Work - Dataset Creation I've spent the last 3.5 months building a dataset. Is this really what a Machine Learning Engineer is supposed to do? From one perspective, I feel like a Data Engineer. From another, I recognise that my ML models are only as good as the data I feed into them. More time curating quality data -> better ML models -> better ML Engineer. Laying the foundations. 🎓 Work - Learning This week I will have a mentor call with an ML Engineer charging $250/hour. That's 5x what I'm charging right now. There is a lot I can learn from him. I could be charging more now. But I'm not trying to maximise my earnings, I am maximising my learnings. More learnings -> more earnings long term. Laying the foundations. 💰 Money - Real Estate We are saving up for our first real estate investment. Once we've got that, we'll have passive income coming in each month, this takes pressure off working and frees up our lives to do more of whatever we want. Laying the foundations. 👨👩👦 Parenting My son was born one year ago. It's been a whirlwind of a year. Lots of stress, lots of pressure, lots of laughs. We're getting into a rhythm now that is working for us as a family. It could be better (couldn't it always?) but feels like a good place to be. We are creating fertile soil for our son to grow.
