Let's talk about balance in design. Balance refers to the visual distribution of elements to create harmony and stability within a layout. In this image, balance is achieved through the strategic positioning of text, image, and contact details. The text on the right side is balanced by the image of the woman on the left, creating a sense of equilibrium. The contact information at the bottom right adds weight to the right side, balancing the overall composition. The ample whitespace around these elements also helps maintain a clean, organized look, ensuring that the design feels neither cluttered nor overly weighted in one area. I like ample space in design personally and with good reason too 😊 This balance guides the viewer's eye naturally across the design, enhancing readability and impact. Solving Indigenous Problems As I scrolled through my LinkedIn feed the other day, I came across a design that caught my attention. It was sleek, modern, and well-thought-out. But as I looked closer, I couldn't help but think about the people who might struggle to use it. I'm talking about the iyas and babas in our local markets, who might not be as familiar with technology. The iya alata in Bodija market, Ibadan, the baba eleran in Ojo oba, Akure, or the iya alaso in Iso Aso, Eko Idumota - these are the people who make up the fabric of our communities. But how many of them can navigate a complex app without consulting their children or grandchildren? The answer is, not many. This got me thinking - are we designing solutions that cater to the needs of our local communities? Or are we just creating more problems for them to solve? There are so many indigenous problems waiting to be solved. Problems that require a deep understanding of our local cultures, traditions, and ways of life. As designers, we have a responsibility to create solutions that are accessible, usable, and relevant to the people who need them most. So, let's take a step back and rethink our design approach. Let's engage with our local communities, listen to their stories, and understand their pain points.
