An astounding 83% of Americans will experience a trauma and about 20% of them will go on to develop #PTSD. Risk factors for PTSD include the type of trauma, the number of traumas/stressors one experiences, and the presence (or not) of a support system. Research finds that emotional numbing is an important determinant of how fast emotional state can transition between positive and negative in people with PTSD. I review that work here, and offer related observations and resources. 🧠Understanding PTSD in the Context of Concussions🧠 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can develop after traumatic experiences, including concussions. The interaction between traumatic brain injuries (TBI), concussions, and PTSD is complex and multifaceted. Key Insights: Prevalence: PTSD affects approximately 3.5% of US adults annually. Symptoms: Common symptoms include unwanted memories, nightmares, avoidance of reminders, negative thoughts, and heightened arousal. Concussion Link: Individuals who have sustained a TBI are 1.5 times more likely to develop new-onset PTSD. The presence of PTSD can exacerbate cognitive and emotional challenges following a concussion.
