More than 88% of Queensland's land is used for primary production. This means how we manage agriculture is intertwined with how we manage our environment. Queensland's regional NRM organisations work on the ground with primary producers and industry groups to deliver knowledge, resources and support where it's needed most. By working together to improve land condition, we're able to mitigate against environmental degradation, enhance biodiversity and water quality outcome and improve carbon sequestration while ensuring food security and a healthy economy. Wondering why we focus so heavily on worm composting? Vermicomposting, also known as worm composting, is an accessible waste reduction effort thanks to its ability to occur in an indoor, contained environment (like an upcycled 5-gallon bucket), minimal space required (no backyard or HOA approval required), and small investment (a cup of worms). We love vermicomposting as an educational tool as it offers hands-on learning about decomposition, soil health, and environmental stewardship - all working together towards a cleaner soil and water system. Effective land management isn’t just about conserving soil or optimizing yields; it’s about creating systems that balance productivity, environmental health, and community resilience. From agroforestry initiatives to regenerative agriculture, these practices help mitigate climate change, restore biodiversity, and ensure food security for future generations. Here’s why this matters for rural development: ✅ Economic Empowerment: Sustainable practices can improve yields and diversify incomes, providing farmers with greater financial stability. ✅ Environmental Protection: Practices like agroforestry preserve water resources, and reduce emissions. ✅ Community Resilience: Healthy lands lead to stronger, more food-secure communities that are better equipped to withstand shocks like droughts or market disruptions.
