Energy Transition in Action: Key Takeaways from JCM’s 2023 Initiatives In 2023, advancing renewable energy projects, the Joint Crediting Mechanism (#JCM) financed over 25 projects in 9 JCM partner countries. Highlighting a #BESS project to be added to a #solarproject in operation, with its impressive scale of 196MWh of #storage, stands as a testament contributing to Chile’s commitment to resolving curtailment issues in the #renewableenergy sector and also managing to reduce 17,975 tCO2-eq./year. Additionally in #Chile, last year the '26.3MW Solar Power and 48MWh Storage Battery Project Utilizing Farmland in the Metropolitan Area and O’Higgins Region.' This project generates #solarenergy and integrates #batterystorage solutions to enhance grid stability and avoid #curtailment. This combination will allow for an annual reduction of 20,197 tons of CO₂. Another remarkable project last year included the first JCM Model Project in Tunisia a Solar Power Expansion with the implementation of two major solar projects in the Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur regions, each with a capacity of 50MW. These projects are set to collectively reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 95,258 tons annually. All 2023 projects combined are expected to reduce a total of 763,193 tons of CO₂ annually. Grenergy Renovables is set to expand its Oasis de Atacama project in Chile after acquiring 1 GW of solar capacity from Repsol and Ibereólica. The deal is valued at $128 million and will enable Grenergy to significantly scale up both the battery storage and solar generation capacities of the flagship project. Upon completion, the battery storage capacity will increase from 4.1 GWh to 11 GWh, and the solar PV generation capacity will double from 1 GW to 2 GW. David Ruiz de Andrés, Executive Chairman of Grenergy, commented: "This is just the first step of what is to come. Battery investments are going to multiply globally, and this project will allow us to be a benchmark in the sector." The acquisition includes a 77 MW solar project and 923 MW of photovoltaic projects at various stages of development. Additionally, a 1 GW interconnection line is already constructed and operational, simplifying the connection of the new projects under development. Located in Chile, Oasis de Atacama is expected to generate around 5.5 TWh of energy annually, which will be supplied during non-solar hours. The project is advancing as planned, with the first phase expected to be operational by the end of 2024. The remaining phases are projected to come online between 2025 and 2026. Grenergy has already secured agreements to sell the energy generated from the first four phases, with further negotiations in advanced stages for the remaining phases. #cleanenergy

In a recent interview to Intersolar, I had the opportunity to discuss the current opportunities and challenges facing the Portuguese market for photovoltaics (PV) and renewable energies. Direct electrification of energy consumption from renewable sources is the most cost-effective, inclusive, democratic, and sustainable way to significantly combat climate change. It also ensures energy security and independence. Licensing and grid capacity remain significant challenges. We need to streamline licensing processes and expand grid capacity to accommodate new projects, which are currently facing long wait times. We must integrate renewables into our landscapes and provide clarity on the regulatory framework to avoid resistance from local communities and ensure smooth implementation of projects. The current market design, which bases electricity prices on the short-term price of natural gas, is unsuitable for non-dispatchable renewable energy sources like solar and wind. We need market-based solutions, such as standardized PPAs, and sovereign guarantees for consumers’ creditworthiness. Reliable regulation is essential for incentivizing private sector investment. We need to ensure bankability for projects and promote hybrid systems using wind, solar, and batteries. Only 20% of available rooftop areas in Portugal are used for PV. We need to develop energy communities and provide financial tools to encourage rooftop solar installations. The market for battery storage is developing slowly due to insufficient support and regulatory issues. We need incentives for behind-the-meter applications and a clear regulatory definition for stand-alone batteries. Looking ahead, we hope to add another 3 to 4 GW of solar capacity in the next 2 to 3 years, aiming for 15 GW at utility scale and 5 GW in self-consumption by 2030. Even achieving just 50% of this target would be a significant step forward.
