From the FPE Magazine Archives: Brian O'Connor P.E. and “Diving Headfirst into Ever-Changing Technologies” “Keeping standards current in a world where technology is advancing so quickly is a difficult task, but for Brian O’Connor it’s also incredibly rewarding. ‘Codes and standards take a long time to develop, often three to five years. Within that timeframe, significant technological advancements may alter standards you’re working on,’ says O’Connor, a fire protection engineer with the National Fire Protection Association. ‘Being able to produce codes and standards quickly while maintaining high quality is an industry-wide challenge that requires everyone to be at the table — researchers, testers, users, manufacturers, enforcing authorities, and so on.’ O’Connor only recently realized that fire protection engineering was his calling, but he’s spent most of his life with safety in mind…” Read more about Brian here: https://ow.ly/aiV050RHBPP #FPEMagazine #SFPEMemberProfile

MFIS 2024 Winter Conference at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort had another successful year of education and training. Day-3 had a very informative discussion and presentation by William S. . William Sudah presented at the Michigan Fire Inspectors Society on Lithium-ion and Gigafactory Manufactoring Safety Assessment, also Industrial Fire Safety Consultant with Honeywell, explained how as of recent lithium-ion battery explosions have demonstrated how dangerous they can be. This presentation explained the four stages of battery failure and how to prevent a thermal runaway with proper “Advanced Detection” at the appropriate stage of failure. It also addressed why conventional gas detection will not prevent thermal runaway and the best design and layout practices as well as the sequence of operation. It was exciting to see an a presentation that explained the stages of lithium-ion battery manufacturing, safety risks at each stage of manufacturing, and solutions. He also covered related codes and standards required for every stage of production, and the various approaches AHJs have had to implement within their jurisdictions to prevent/minimize fire threats and protect people. #lithium #battery #explosion #fireprevention #firesafety #recycling #recycle #Gigafactory #Manufactoring

The two terms “circuit” and “pathway” in NFPA-72 Generally, the terms “circuit” and “pathway” are often used interchangeably, but actually, they are different. ▶ A circuit is defined in Chapter 3 in NFPA-72 as “either means of providing power or a connection path between locations”, ▶ while a pathway is “any circuit, conductor, optic fiber, radio carrier or other means connecting two or more location.” In a nut shell, a circuit is copper, while a pathway can be copper or any other type of connection. ▶ Pathway performance is defined in Section 12.3, using Class A, B, C, D, E, N, or X based on the circuit performance. NB: NFPA 72 does not determine what class is used on a particular pathway, but rather defines the performance of the pathway. The specification, designer, AHJ determine what class of pathway is used.
