Susceptibility to landslides is more on the minds of environmental reporters, especially in the wake of #HurricaneHelene, which caused hundreds of them. To get a better read on local landslide risk for local stories, #SEJournalReportersToolbox recommends an enhanced resource from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which layers the risk data into easily readable map form. https://lnkd.in/dwwP-XQy

NOTICE: Curtailments remain in effect for Scott River watershed From the State Water Resources Control Board: Curtailments remain in effect for the Scott River watershed. The flow at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Jones gage as of 1:30 PM today is 29.8 cubic feet per second (cfs), which is less than the minimum flow requirement of 30 cfs. (Note the flow requirement increases to 33 cfs in September.) #Curtailments #NorthCoast #ScottRiver #StateWaterResourcesControlBoard

How do we determine what is enough 'room for the river' and what do we need to do better at in River Restoration? We need to understand the history and trajectory of pre-modification channels, so that our restoration objectives are focused on the “right” river type. This will help us make sure we have resilient river channels, and that we understand and are able to communicate to our communities how these river channels accommodate and adjust to changes in discharge and sediment. Tools such as the natural character index (NCI), and the River Styles Framework are ideal for determining what would be suitable 'room for your river'. https://lnkd.in/gHCkJpDh https://lnkd.in/gT2nskFp #rivers #riverrestoration #fluvialgeomorphology

Another Landslide Excessive rainfall is considered the major landslide triggering mechanism. During rainfall, water infiltrates into the subsurface; reducing the matric suction, increasing pore water pressure, and decreasing the shear strength of the soil. The prevailing unfavourable ground and geomorphological conditions can further exacerbate the vulnerability and severity of catastrophic landslides. Hence, it is vital to identify different landslide mechanisms, key drivers for rainfall-induced landslides, and risk assessment methods for adopting appropriate failure mitigation strategies. source: https://lnkd.in/dRYRb8Yg 🎥Thanks for sharing, *ℂ𝕠𝕡𝕪𝕣𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕤 𝕧𝕚𝕕𝕖𝕠 𝕓𝕖𝕝𝕠𝕟𝕘 𝕥𝕠 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕡𝕖𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕧𝕖 𝕠𝕨𝕟𝕖𝕣. nuelarchitects Landslides are sudden movements of soil, rock, and debris down a slope, often triggered by factors that destabilize the ground. Heavy rainfall is a common cause, as it saturates the soil, reducing its stability. Earthquakes can also shake loose slopes, while volcanic activity can destabilize terrain through eruptions and pyroclastic flows. Human activities, such as deforestation, construction, and mining, exacerbate the risk by removing stabilizing vegetation, undercutting slopes, or adding extra weight. Landslides pose significant dangers, capable of causing casualties, destroying infrastructure, and disrupting communities. Climate change is increasing the frequency of landslides by intensifying weather events like heavy rains. Effective mitigation includes engineering solutions like retaining walls, slope stabilization, and proper drainage, along with early warning systems to reduce risks in vulnerable areas. #earth #geotechnical #engineering #civil_engineering #landslide #earth_moving #soil Source: @epidemic_taiwan | Instagram]
