Early Edge California published a new policy brief, "Supporting Student Parents and their Young Children in California’s Institutions of Higher Education," that shares insights into the unique needs and challenges these parenting students face and recommendations for how institutions of higher education (IHEs) can better position themselves to address and meet the needs of both parent and young child. There’s now a statewide view of dual enrollment for public high school students! The key takeaways from Policy Analysis for California Education: About 10 percent of all 9th through 12th graders enrolled in a community college course in 2021–22. While dual enrollment participation is low overall for 9th grade, participation is more equitable than in later grades. Opportunities for dual enrollment vary widely by county. By the time the highly anticipated fall rolls around and you reach high school, you have journeyed through the US education system for quite a while. By age 14, you have survived preschool and kindergarten, risen through elementary school, and transitioned to junior high! Naturally, you might ask “How much different could high school be?” Well, the answer is simple, VERY! While it may only be the next grade up, the distance can seem much further. https://lnkd.in/g8HQpF8E

Our work Transform Education Now is grounded in the lived experience of community and the power of Parent Leadership. We know that in order to truly create a more effective education system, we must start with those most affected. By elevating the voices of parents across our state, we can ensure that we are focused on the problems most important to them and that the solutions we seek are grounded in their hopes and dreams for their children. That is why we are so excited to share a new survey on the state of education opportunity in the Centennial State. This survey provides not only a unique window into the opportunities available to students in our state right now but also allows us to compare those answers to parents across our region and across the country. This report is just the beginning of the the work to ensure that families across Colorado are not only heard, but have a seat at the decision making table. Families are telling law makers exactly what they need in their children’s education, its time we do more than listen, its time to act! Maryland ranked 5th in the Nation for “Best High Schools”; Did you know in 2023, U.S. News and World Report ranked Maryland 5th in the entire nation for “Best High Schools”? These schools were ranked based on six factors: College Readiness, College Curriculum Breadth, Graduation Rate, Math and Reading Performance, Math and Reading Proficiency, and Underserved Student Performance. And it doesn’t stop at high schools— Many middle schools and elementary schools have ranked exceptionally high on the charts as well. In fact, two elementary schools (located in Montgomery County) were recognized as “2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools” by the U.S. Department of Education. … Marylands’ education systems are stellar. If you’re considering making a move to another state and are worrying in regards to the quality of the schools, Maryland could be a great choice for you. Do keep in mind though, that not all schools are of equal quality, even if they’re located here in Maryland. You should still do your research in determining which school district in particular you would like your child/ children (or future child/children) to attend. If you’re not sure where to start, ask your REALTOR and they will have the resources you need; they are your local expert, after all! 😉

Beyond all the benefits of having a robust school choice program, better parent involvement has to be in the top-tier of why we should implement better programs for our students. Involving parents, who know their children best, is crucial to making positive education decisions for kids. https://bit.ly/4czhjkT

To date, we’ve awarded more than 180,000 bicycles to hard-working students in the second grade in a mission to improve child literacy in the Greater Houston area. 💡 But why do we target second graders? In a survey we took with educators, we discovered that the second grade is the last formative year in which students are learning to read and sound out what they are reading. Starting in the third grade, students are transitioning to reading for content and understanding. 📊 After the third grade, students not reading on grade level are four times more likely not to graduate from high school. And with less than half of Houston ISD first-, second- and third-graders reading at or above grade level as of 2022, we’ll continue our program until that number reaches 100 percent.

I recently met with early childhood directors affiliated with the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children (OAEYC) to talk about the science of reading and how it applies to preschool-aged children. Did you know that the opposite – early childhood research informing the science of reading – is also true? ICYMI: in the May/June 2023 issue of The Reading League Journal, I wrote about the “Contributions of Early Childhood Research to Reading Science.” These include shifting to an emergent literacy (rather than readiness) perspective, identifying key emergent literacy skills and effective practices to support the development of these skills, highlighting the critically important role of oral language, attending to home and early childhood environments as these support literacy development, and emphasizing the benefits of shared book reading and literacy-related play. This article can be accessed via the Reading League Journal for subscribers: https://lnkd.in/evcXTWw3 Or, you can request a copy directly from us by emailing [email protected].
