𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟮𝟵 🌍 At #COP29, a side event on resilient futures for smallholder farmers will address a recurring challenge which is the disconnect between financing needs and smallholder farmers. While financiers look for large-scale investments with clear business cases, smallholder farmers, responsible for a significant share of the world’s food supply and biodiversity, particularly in LMICs, often lack the assets and turnover required to access these funds for climate adaptation. The discussion will include: 🌱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 for smallholder farmers. 🔍 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽, featuring insights from financing institutions, civil society, farmer organisations, and researchers. 💡 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽, supporting smallholder farmers on their path to climate resilience. This session will bring together a panel of diverse stakeholders including SNV, foster dialogue, and work towards actionable solutions to make climate finance more accessible for those who need it most. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/djEthw9F #COP29 #FoodSystems #ClimateFinance

Our main event at #cop29 is on Thursday 14th 11.30am at the Action On Food hub with One Acre Fund's very own rockstar Michelle Kagari, as well as Environmental Defense Fund Europe, SDG2 Advocacy Hub, and panelists from Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) Neil Watkins. They will spotlight a big glaring missed (frequently, at every COP) agenda topic despite Baku being the "climate finance cop" - the climate finance gap (both quality and quantity) for >510 million smallholder farmers to build climate resilience. Please join us if you're here. And if not stay posted for more details! More context below Currently, of the estimated $153 billion needed each year to support the world's 511 million smallholders, only $2 billion is reaching them. This $151 billion gap isn't just a financial figure; it's a barrier to realising transformative potential in sustainable agriculture, yielding $403 billion in benefits through: 🌽 Higher yields 💰 Increased revenue 🧬 Improvements in soil health 🏥 Healthier families 🌳 Lasting ecological and economic resilience through agroforestry We are calling on leaders at COP29 to close this gap by rethinking how climate finance can reach smallholders. At COP29, world leaders are focusing on climate finance. This is a crucial opportunity to ensure farmers get the right support to transition to agriculture practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience. Less than 5% of climate finance currently reaches food and agriculture, even though the sector contributes one-third of global emissions and is on the front lines of climate impacts. We need better, more accessible and impactful financing to help farmers reduce emissions, boost resilience and keep us all fed on a changing planet. High-quality climate finance means: 💸Accessible funds for farmers when they need them. 🚜Targeted investments that drive real climate action. 📢Concessional terms to avoid putting farmers and countries into unsustainable debt. Let’s push for climate finance that supports farmers around the world and secures a sustainable food future. 🌍 As we race toward #NetZero, farmers must not be left behind. Agriculture plays a critical role in our response to the climate crisis, yet the path to resilient, low-emission agrifood systems can be challenging, particularly for farmers who already face economic uncertainty due to climate impacts. This op-ed on Devex, co-authored by CGIAR’s Executive Managing Director Ismahane Elouafi and FAO’s Director of Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Environment Kaveh Zahedi, calls for a just transition that protects farmer livelihoods and ensures an inclusive path to sustainable transformation. A fair transition requires the commitment of governments, development organizations, and private sectors. 🌱 Read: https://lnkd.in/esgTtPfQ #OneCGIAR #COP29Azerbaijan

With #COP29 in the rear-view mirror, the AFi reflects on key outcomes from the summit and important developments related to food systems and agriculture. Highlights from the summit included: 💰 $300bn of climate finance per year was agreed as part of the discussions to create a New Collective Quantified Goal, as outlined by the Paris Agreement in 2015. 🇧🇷 Brazil launched its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), announcing its intention to reduce emissions by 67% by 2035, compared to 2005 levels. 🤝 An Indigenous Peoples Troika was created by leaders from Australia, Brazil, Eastern Europe and the Pacific. 🚜 The FAO announced the creation of the Baku Harmoniya Climate Initiative for Farmers, a new platform for farmers as part of the agrifood transformation efforts. 📉 30+ countries signed the Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste, which aims to cut methane levels by 30% (compared to 2020 levels) by 2030. Despite this progress, mentions of food and agriculture were largely absent from the high-level outcomes of the summit. Considering land sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions account for ~25% of all anthropogenic GHG emissions, the lack of dedicated action to address the role of the land sector is worrying. Many AFi Coalition members were on site at the summit to host events and convene important discussions between key stakeholders. 🚨Meat industry lobbying alert🚨COP29 climate conference was swarming with biggest number of agribusiness lobbyists yet - including 52 delegates from the meat industry e.g. from JBS, the world's largest meat corporation. Overall, there were 204 agribusiness lobbyists, with nearly 40% of them travelling to the summit "with country badges – which lent them privileged access to diplomatic negotiations, up from 30 percent at COP28, and just five percent at COP27." "But while multiple studies and peer-reviewed science points to the need for a drastic drop in meat and dairy herds, and a shift to healthier, sustainable food as the surefire route to cut emissions, the agribusiness industry lobbies hard against tougher environmental regulations and dietary change, in the EU, U.S. and at climate summits." We need to reform COP climate summits to lock out lobbyists from polluting industries like fossil fuels and livestock! The COP29 Presidency is actively participating in the SB60 meetings, indicating their readiness to host the climate community later this year. They have launched the Harmonia for Climate Resilience initiative, which focuses on food and agriculture, specifically targeting farmers, villages, and rural communities. The Harmonia initiative aims to: - Harmonize agri-food actions. - Enhance climate finance towards inclusive agri-food systems. - Place farmers, including women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples, at the center of climate actions. These three actions are designed to foster climate-resilient villages and communities. Through SB60, COP29 will be introducing several other initiatives. The focus on food and agriculture as their first launch, highlights the importance of these sectors in the upcoming COP29 discussions. COP29 will be launching many other initiatives through the SB60. It is interesting that their first initiative focuses on food and agriculture, an indication of the significance of food and agriculture in the upcoming COP29 discussions.
