🍒Cherry trees are typically covered during the flowering and fruit development phases, but they are left uncovered in winter to allow for the chilling requirements of the buds to be fulfilled.🔧 Polytunnels offer several advantages, as they protect flowers and fruit, which in turn improves fruit quality, consistency of marketable production, and overall yields. Additionally, the flowering and harvesting period of cherries becomes more predictable.🌱💧 https://lnkd.in/eDJXW8vt

The Farmer Agri (The Family Farm) The Farmer Agri (The Family Farm) Green Manure Green undecomposed material used as #manure is called #greenmanure. It is obtained in two ways: by growing green manure crops or by collecting green leaf (along with twigs) from plants grown in wastelands, field bunds and forest. Green manuring is growing in the field plants usually belonging to the leguminous family and incorporating into the soil after sufficient growth. The #plants that are grown for green manure are known as green manure crops. The most important green manure crops are sunnhemp, dhaincha, pillipesara, clusterbeans and Sesbania rostrata. Advantages Green manuring improves #soil structure, increases water holding capacity and decreases soil loss by #erosion. Growing green manure crops in the off season reduces weed proliferation and #weed growth. Green manuring helps in reclamation of alkaline soils. Root knot #nematodes can be controlled by green manuring. GREEN LEAF MANURE Application of green leaves and twigs of trees, shrubs and herbs collected from elsewhere is known as green leaf manuring. Forest tree leaves are the main sources for green leaf manure. Plants growing in wastelands, field bunds etc., are another source of green leaf manure. The important plant species useful for green leaf manure are neem, mahua, wild indigo, #Glyricidia, Karanji (Pongamia glabra) calotropis, avise(Sesbania grandiflora), subabul and other shrubs. #greenmanurecrops #alkalinesoils

[#SustainableFarming Practices -- Part 4] 🌿 Another key #permaculture-based cultivation practice we use on our farms is ‘circle #guilds’ 🔄 These purposefully designed circular formations place mutually beneficial plant species together to enhance nutrient absorption and optimise space and resources Swipe ➡️ to learn more about this practice! -- We transitioned our entire 17-acre Coconut Plantation on Hunsur towards #regenerative cultivation by creating ‘coconut circles’ ◎🥥 Here, the previously existing mature coconut trees were intercropped with crops like banana, papaya, colocasia, vetiver, and lemongrass to create multi-layered stories. The organic litter from the plantation is put in the middle of the circle as mulch along with water, so that the roots of the trees planted on the periphery can efficiently absorb water and nutrients. 💧🌱

Healthy soil is an important part of growing plants that thrive. If your yard has poor soil quality, it can lead to root growth problems and plant establishment issues, including drowned roots and increased acidity. While you can certainly fix these problems with amendments like compost and perlite, there is another effective (and eye-catching) solution—growing more plants. Plenty of beautiful varieties, like marigolds and sunflowers, can improve soil quality. Ahead, we spoke to plant experts about species that can reduce compaction, provide essential nutrients, prevent pests, and do more to boost the health of your soil. #soilhealth #organicfarm #agroecology #sustainable_agriculture #foodSecurity

On Day 1 of Pollinator Week, Native Monarchs celebrates Limoneira, a Ventura County Agribusiness with over 130 years of citrus production. Sustainable land stewardship is at the heart of Limoneira’s core practices. . . HEALTHY SOIL SYSTEMS: Limoneira uses a diverse mix of cover crops, which includes ryegrass and malva, but also flowering nectar plants to attract pollinators, sequester more carbon and repress weeds. The cover crops dominate where large weeds would normally need to be sprayed and mowed. Cover crops are another way Limoneira takes care of their soils. . . From prunings to leaf litter, Limoneira also utilizes organic mulch to revitalize the soil that nourishes their orchards. Productive trees and high-quality fruit can only come from people who care deeply about the natural systems of the land they steward. . . #limoneira #santapaulaca #healthysoils #regenerativefarming #covercrops #savethepollinators #savethemonarchs #nativemonarchs #monarchbotanika

Harvesting seeds from your native plants, and sharing them with your neighbors and friends, is a great way to create more biodiversity and habitat on a low budget. But always keep in mind: many critters rely on seeds as food, or seed heads as habitat, so always harvest modestly. Shared from Healthy Yards. Native plant seeds are ready to harvest when they are dry, firm, and fall off the plant easily. This can happen two to five weeks after the plant blooms for annual and perennial wildflowers and native grasses, and sometimes two months or longer for shrub and tree seeds. Here are some other signs that seeds are ready to harvest: • The pods have turned from green to brown • The seed capsules are bursting open • The stems are dry and brittle • The seeds are plump, hard, and dark-colored To test if a seed is ripe, you can perform a "cut test" on seeds that are large enough to cut in half. If the inside of the seed is plump, white, and starchy, it's ripe. If it's wet, transparent, or green, it's not ripe yet. If it's black, brown, or dusty, it's rotten. Here are some tips for collecting native plant seeds: • Record the date: Note the date of seed collection so you know when to harvest in the future. • Take photos: Take a photo of the leaf and a small branch to confirm the species. • Store in paper bags: Place the seeds in brown paper bags to prevent molding. • Avoid overheating: Store seeds in a place that doesn't get too hot or experience temperature fluctuations. • Avoid high moisture: Keep the seeds away from high moisture content. • Don't collect from rare or endangered species: Only collect from plants that are abundant in the area. • Don't take more than 10% of the seeds: Leave enough seeds behind so the plant can reseed itself.

Dear bee farmers. *It's a swarming season .* Swarming means natural "spliting" of a colony. Swarming bees are actually non- threatening very calm and the swarming behavior is a natural means for bees to reproduce. Swarms can occur most anytime throughout the year but most often occur here in Uganda during the rainy season eh when bees have enough food stores . They occur when a new queen is made in a colony or when the rains reach their habitant especially those in anti-hills , tree trunks etc. During this rainy season, you realize most trees and shrubs are flowering that means there is alot of pollen and nectar collected and you if have opened your Hive of recent, you realize that it's this time when the Queen is more productive with lots of brood in the hive. *How do we benefit from this season as bee farmers* 1. It's now that you have to add more super(s) for those using the Langstroth hive if you find that the bees have fully filled up the brooder chamber. 2. Those wanting to do colony divisions please go ahead b'se the growth rate of the colony is high due to availability of enough forage. 3. Those who want to catch a swam, and you have empty hives, do it now. Lots of swarms moving, just clean your Hive, bait it and site it properly. You will get bees in a shortest time possible. 4. Use this time as well to plant forage for your apiary. We have free Calliandra and other agroforestry trees. Kindly feel free to reach us for any bee-related services. At Mt Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE), we offer the following FREE services 1. Tree Planting 2. Beekeeping 3. Lorena stoves 4. Sustainable land management 5. Village savings and loans associations. This message is sponsored by Melifera Beekeeping Company Ltd. (MBC).

Mulch does matter! What type of mulch used also matters! Two commercial lime farm sites in FNQ Four different approaches to mulching - Rhodes grass hay, tree tea mulch, southern pine woodchip and side thrown interrow as the normal practice. Over three years of testing soil and overlaying yield results this citizen science project between Wet Tropics soil care, our farmer led soil health group and Terrain NRM sure had some interesting insights for us. - Hay or tree tea mulch is better to use than just side throwing inter row plants/weeds and spraying under your trees - Avoid using green soft wood woodchip as the effects are detrimental to yield however will be eventually good for soil health outcomes - Woodchip needs to be ramial (branch wood of less than 7 cm in diameter) and from hardwood tree species. If you don’t know what tree your woodchip comes from or if it is woodchip from a soft wood sp, you must rest the woodchip for 6-12 months before application to release the tannins and allopathic effects of the softwood woodchip. Links to the reports are at the bottom of the media release below👇

🌿 Enhance Your Orchard with Comfrey plant (Symphytum officinale)🌱🌿 ❓Are you seeking natural ways to enhance the health and productivity of your fruit trees? Consider incorporating comfrey into your orchard management plan for the following outstanding reasons: ✅Soil Enrichment: Comfrey’s deep roots draw up vital nutrients like Nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium from the subsoil, bringing them to the surface where fruit trees can access them. ✅Natural Fertilizer: Use comfrey leaves as green manure or mulch. They decompose quickly, releasing nutrients back into the soil and acting as a natural, nutrient-rich fertilizer. ✅Moisture Retention & Weed Suppression: Mulching with comfrey leaves helps retain soil moisture, reduce water evaporation, and suppress weeds, creating a more favorable environment for your fruit trees. ✅Biodiversity Enhancement: Comfrey provides habitat and food for a variety of beneficial wildlife, contributing to greater biodiversity in your orchard. Comfrey also attracts pollinators📌 📍By integrating comfrey into your fruit tree planting strategy, you not only improve soil health and fertility but also create a more resilient and sustainable orchard ecosystem. 🌳✨ 🌬Was this insightful?
