SMAC Gallery is pleased to announce our participation at Art Brussels, with a solo presentation by Bonolo Kavula from 25 April - 28 April 2024. "Combining print, design, painting and sculpture, Kavula works with —and challenges— traditions and techniques, as she pursues her ancestry in the present tense. There are decades and dimensions of cultural, political, familial and personal histories encoded into Kavula’s artworks. Where words often fail, or where vital records, stories and cultures are lost, stolen or destroyed, it is just that new forms of communications surface." Think about the last time you went on a walk. Do you remember seeing any public art? If so, think about some of the details that stood out to you about the artwork and the impact it had on your walk. Public art is all around us, often representing the communities they are located in. Take for instance this maquette from Alexandre Arrechea’s public art series, No Limits. Initially located on Park Avenue, the series featured 10 large sculptures, all inspired by New York's most notable landmarks. This maquette resembles the Sherry Netherland, a historic Hotel on Fifth Avenue. However, notice how the building is not set in its typical vertical position; instead, the artwork loops around, its configuration serving as a reflection of our society's social and political shifts. Take a closer look at the maquette in the image and consider the following questions. - What are some elements within the design of the artwork that stand out to you? - Does it look like the maquette is portraying movement? - Why do you think that Alexandre Arrechea used buildings to symbolize the changes our society undergoes? - Is it important for neighborhoods to have public art? Why might it be beneficial to our society? ___ Alexandre Arrechea (Cuba, b. 1970) Sherry Netherland, 2021 27 x 27 x 3 inches Stainless steel Courtesy of the Artist #LearnWithMOLAA #Slowlookingsunday #MOLAA @AlexandreArrechea

Sculpture Expo Exhibition Statement: On the verge of opening Sculpture Exposition 2019, it’s necessary to mention some points. The contemporary era is the time of conflict between modernism and post-modernism. Modern tendencies have been under the influence and control of aesthetic frameworks and may be considered as aestheticformalistic principles, concentrating on sensory (visual) elements. While post-modern tendencies prioritize the artist’s thoughts, concepts and interactions with the world. Whereas ideas and concepts cannot be valued by any scales or aesthetic principles, we cannot determine the value of contemporary artworks or place them in a value hierarchy and evaluate them. On the other hand, post-modern world embraces the plurality of tendencies and especially the tendencies which have been marginalized. However, apart from the tendencies (aesthetic or conceptual) art has its special value in the society which may not be compared to other products. --------------------- 98 Artists – 98 Artworks #hameh_gallery #SculptureExpo

'In Silence with Matthew Wong' is a one-of-a-kind in-gallery experience at the Van Gogh Museum. At the end of the Matthew Wong exhibition, you find yourself in one last room. It's dark and spacious with a blue-lit atmosphere. Within this room is just one painting. As you enter the space, you encounter a series of prompts and tips to prepare you for the silent experience: - Allow your eyes and thoughts to wander freely - Focus on a detail, a colour, the composition or the paint strokes - Look at the work from a different angle, or lie down instead of sitting. You might see something completely new. - Reflect on your feelings: what does the work evoke in you? This space serves two purposes. First, with minimal distractions, it allows you to concentrate fully on the single artwork, noticing all the details and nuances more deeply. Secondly, it provides a quiet, peaceful place for reflection on the exhibition's themes away from the busyness of the rest of the museum. It's unlike any other part of the museum. Go and see it if you can! Are there any other examples of galleries with just one painting? I know of 'Room to Breathe' at Manchester Art Gallery from Louise Thompson, with its minimal artwork and comfy sofas. Where else in the world can you do this? 🎨 Spotlight on a Masterpiece: "View of the Acropolis" by Ivan Aivazovsky 🎨 As a professional art historian, it's a pleasure to share insights into Ivan Aivazovsky's enchanting "View of the Acropolis." Known predominantly for his seascapes, Aivazovsky's rendition of the Acropolis stands out for its poignant departure into architectural landscapes, showcasing his versatile mastery over light and atmosphere. 🖼️ Artistic Vision: Aivazovsky is renowned for his ability to infuse light into his canvases, a technique that reaches new heights in this painting. Although primarily known for his marine subjects, in "View of the Acropolis," he captures the majestic ruins in twilight, draped in an ethereal glow that emphasizes both the temporal grandeur and enduring legacy of the ancient monument. The gentle interplay of light and shadow, combined with a meticulous attention to atmospheric detail, invites viewers into a moment suspended in time. 🔄 Controversies: While Aivazovsky faced few controversies directly related to his artworks, his career was not without challenges. His focus on romanticism was sometimes seen as out of step with the realist trends of the late 19th century. Furthermore, being of Armenian descent in the Russian Empire, Aivazovsky navigated complex national identities, which occasionally colored critical reception of his work. This painting not only reflects Aivazovsky's technical prowess but also his deep reverence for history, encapsulating a rare terrestrial theme amidst his oceanic oeuvre. A true testament to historical and cultural preservation through art. #IvanAivazovsky #Acropolis #ArtHistory #Romanticism #LandscapePainting #FineArt #19thCenturyArt #RussianArtists #ArmenianArt #ArtLovers #MuseumFromHome #ArtisticVision #CulturalHeritage #HistoricalArt #ArtisticMastery #TwilightArt #ClassicalRuins #WorldArt #ArtCollector #LightAndShadow #Masterpiece #ArtisticTalent #Heritage #PaintingOfTheDay #ArtInDetail #VisualCulture #ArtEducation #ArtForSale
