"What the data tell us is that the frequency and severity of #disasters at local-state scales is increasing with rural, suburban, and urban places being affected nationwide." Susan Cutter, co-director of the Hazards Vulnerability and Resilience Institute at the University of South Carolina, emphasizes the need for enhancing #resilience to reduce their impacts on people. On the other hand, Samantha Montano, a professor of #emergencymanagement at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, highlights the crucial role of state and local policies in either creating or minimizing risk for future disasters. #riskmitigation #mitigationnation #disastermitigation #disasterpreparedness #disastermanagement #stateandlocalpolicy #flooding 📖 Read more about this important discussion on disaster preparedness and resilience ⤵️

Check out this analysis from Mathew Sanders and Andrea Snyder highlighting insights and recommendations for #resilience from county leaders on the frontlines of disasters
Extreme weather hits county governments hard, with over 25% experiencing major disasters in 2023 alone. In response, National Association of Counties and Pew held resilience roundtables with county leaders, focusing on ways to reduce long-term disaster risks. These discussions highlighted three priorities: streamlining access to federal funds, addressing economic stressors, and promoting resilient land-use planning. https://pew.org/4e613Yl #Resilience #Flooding #Disasters

You don’t have to be a hero to make a difference. In recent years, New South Wales communities have faced catastrophic bushfires and floods, exacerbated by climate change. These disasters have overwhelmed systems, prompting communities to organise their own response, recovery and preparation efforts. "Stories are the Toolkit" is a vignette series showcasing these community-led actions based on interviews with 68 individuals from the Northern Rivers, the Hawkesbury, and the Blue Mountains. The stories highlight the diverse, informal, and seemingly spontaneous efforts that have been crucial in saving lives, providing targeted support and promoting long-term disaster readiness. Rooted in social connection and local knowledges, these “ordinary” actions reflect the strength and resilience of communities. Communities have become adept at disaster response and recovery, eager to share their lessons learned to inspire and inform other communities during future disasters. Not a good list for Houston to be on, but a further demonstration of the challenges the Harris County region must work to overcome. "Harris County, which encompasses much of Houston, was deemed a high risk for climate disasters, with a 99.97 score. Additionally, it had a low resilience score of 12.73 out of a possible 100, and a very high vulnerability score (89.53 out of 100). The climate flip-flopping from severe droughts to floods, and now even hurricane-level winds at a moment's notice, prompted researchers to calculate the county's estimated annual cost to disasters at a stunning $2.2 billion. Texas also ranked the third worst state for climate disasters, with 39 FEMA disaster declarations in the last decade. The state's expected annual loss for climate and weather events is estimated at $8.2 trillion, per Claimguide's study. "

A recent study has identified Southern California as the most disaster-prone region in the United States. The area faces a variety of natural hazards, including earthquakes, wildfires, floods, and severe storms. For instance, in early 2024, the region was hit by severe storms leading to President Biden declaring a major disaster in the state, making federal aid available for recovery efforts in affected areas like San Diego County (Home). Southern California’s vulnerability is highlighted by its frequent encounters with atmospheric rivers—massive rainstorms causing heavy rainfall, flooding, and mudslides. Recent examples include significant storms in January 2023 and February 2024 that caused extensive damage and required robust response and recovery operations from local emergency services (GovTech). Understanding these risks is crucial for enhancing preparedness and resilience in the region, which continues to adapt to these challenges through improved emergency management and community cooperation.

interesting! Building resilient communities is top of mind for my MIPM program. Here's a toolkit that communities can use:
September is Disaster Preparedness Month. As of June 2024, 68% of designated Main Street districts are within census tracts identified as climate vulnerable, and our research has found that 75% of the Main Street Network has experienced a major disaster in the past five years. To help Main Streets prepare for and respond to these risks, we created the Main Street Disaster and Resilience Toolkit. Developed in partnership with the National Park Service and others, this resource provides information to help communities understand local vulnerabilities, mitigate their impacts, and respond to events as they occur. As the Cedar River went above flood stage this week, the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance reviewed its emergency plan. We don't expect to be in any danger this time around, but we have had to evacuate our riverside building in #DowntownCedarRapids twice in the 12 years we've been here. Most of our flood plain neighbors also have done much to prepare their buildings and properties, and to be ready. And, of course, the ultimate in natural disaster preparedness is underway with the $700M+ flood protection system being put in place by the #CityofCedarRapids and the #USArmyCorpofEngineers. This new report from the #USChamberofCommerce confirms the significant economic impact of preparedness - for communities, for companies and for individuals. Do your part. https://lnkd.in/g7Ge8VsZ
