❓ Can you put a dotted border on a bar in Tableau? ❌ Not really, but you can make it look like you did. A fellow Tableau developer at work had a requirement for a dotted bar on a Total of a Gantt chart, very similar to the image in this post. You can't currently do that in Tableau. But you CAN hack a look-alike: ✔ Create a separate worksheet with the total. ✔ Add it to you dashboard as a floating worksheet. ✔ Format the color of the worksheet to be the same as the bar. ✔ Add your border to the worksheet itself. ✔ Adjust the size (and continue to adjust by testing it on Server 🤣). With this method, the total value is still dynamic, and with a centered label, still viable as a single bar. A major weakness of this (as a Gantt chart add-on) is that it only really works for waterfall values that end positive and end in the maximum value - if the data is going to be refreshed. In those cases, you can size the total properly because Tableau will resize the elements to the same portion of the graph on the left every time. The value that I sized to equal the net after the last two negative categories is unlikely to be the appropriate size on updated data. However, it's fine if you're creating a final presentation. Today, let’s explore the basic parts of Tableau’s interface: Worksheets, Dashboards, and Stories. We’ll also cover important elements like Rows, Columns, Marks, Filters, and Pages all necessary for building great visualizations. In Power BI, DAX Measures are essential, but there’s no DAX in Tableau. 😄 Instead, Tableau uses Calculated Fields to create new data or perform calculations based on existing data, similar to Calculated Columns in Power BI. A special feature of Tableau’s Calculated Fields is LOD (Level of Detail) Expressions, which let you do calculations at different levels of detail than what’s shown in your chart. While they’re not exactly like DAX Measures, LOD Expressions help control how detailed your data is within Tableau. 💡Tableau tip: Did you know that in Tableau, you can utilize any chart as a powerful filter for other visuals? This simple yet incredibly effective feature allows to do deep-dives easily and get a better understanding of the variations in trends and drivers for the same.📊 For example, one could select a particular region on a map chart and a view of ordered city-wise sales for that region is available immediately in an adjoining bar chart. Such cross-filtering behavior is not ON by default in Tableau (although it is default ON in power BI and Looker Studio). But turning it ON is simple. I just had to share this with the community! Here’s a quick rundown of how I did it: Creating Random Worksheets: I quickly put together a few worksheets to demonstrate the reset filter button. They may not be perfect, but they served their purpose! Building the Dashboard: I added the worksheets to a dashboard and enabled all the filters by showing them on the dashboard. The Magic of Extensions: Here’s where it gets interesting! From the dashboard objects, I selected the “Extensions” and searched for the “Filter Bookmarks” extension.
