When passion meets generosity, you get people like Kevin Jorgeson. Kevin is renowned in the climbing community for his historic free climb of the Dawn Wall on El Capitan. It’s one of the most difficult climbs ever attempted. He is also sponsored by some of the biggest names in the industry, further cementing his reputation as an elite athlete and ambassador for the sport. Most recently, he started Sessions Climbing out of Santa Rosa, CA. I showed up unnaounced asking the front desk a lot of questions. They said, you should just meet Kevin, well tell him to come over. What started as an unannounced visit to his gym turned into an exclusive tour and a masterclass in what it means to build a climbing gym that truly resonates with its community. Kevin poured into me, offering insights on what pitfalls to avoid as a new gym owner and how to focus our time and energy for maximum impact. He said since we just opened, focus on culture. At Sessions, the guiding vision is “time well spent.” That idea trickles down to every part of the business: • For staff: creating an environment where their work feels meaningful. • For members: ensuring every visit is enriching, both physically and emotionally. • For owners like me: sharing his time and experience to help others succeed. The fact that Kevin would invest that much of himself into helping a fellow climbing gym owner—especially someone who showed up unannounced—speaks volumes about his character and commitment to this industry. Thank you, Kevin, for leading by example and proving that the climbing world is about more than walls and holds—it’s about building a culture of shared growth and connection. Here’s to making every moment in our gyms time well spent.
