Monday morning blues? The average unhappy, unproductive worker loses nine hours of productive time per week and it's costing the economy £11bn every year. Only 13% of employees with wellbeing issues believe they are very productive at work. More than half (58%), equivalent to more than 16 million people, believe that improvements in the health and wellbeing services provided by their employer would lead to less time off and increase their productivity. Health & wellbeing initiatives are not just something to look good on the annual report, they make a difference to the bottom line. #healthandwellbeing #employment #recruitment

🧠 This article in today's Guardian flags up the rising cost of workplace sickness, reporting on new research from the IPPR. The research flags up presenteeism as a major issue. Workers in the UK are amongst the least likely in Europe to take sick days and are more likely to turn up at work while sick. This has a enormous impact on productivity. Presenteeism is also a major issue to emerge from our ongoing research on workplace mental health and productivity funded by the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council. Our longitudinal employer survey found a dramatic increase in presenteeism in 2023, with levels remaining high this year. Well over a third of businesses reported some level of presenteeism in their workplace in our 2024 survey. Presenteeism is certainly an issue that needs to be tackled in UK workplaces, and one way to do this is through improved training for managers. The Guardian article cites the latest publication to come from our mental health and productivity research team on this theme. We believe this is the first study to show that training line managers in mental health is linked to better business outcomes. Links to the paper on line manager training, and to our latest survey report are included in the comments below. A recent article by The Guardian highlights a growing issue in the workplace: the hidden cost of presenteeism and rising sickness rates, showcasing the importance of businesses prioritising employee health and wellbeing. Key points from the report: 📊 Annual cost of workplace sickness in the UK has increased to £103bn in 2023, up from £73bn in 2018. 🏢 The primary cause is a loss of productivity, costing £25bn, as employees lose an average of 44 days of productivity due to presenteeism. 🚑 Sick leave has increased, with employees now taking 6.7 days off on average, up from 3.7 days in 2018. 😷 Presenteeism remains a significant issue, with many UK workers continuing to work while ill, leading to reduced performance and increased mistakes. 💼 Businesses and investors are increasingly viewing employee health as a critical asset. 🧠 Mental health training for managers has been linked to better business outcomes, such as improved customer service and employee retention. With more people working through illness and taking sick days, it's clear that this issue affects both productivity and overall health. At Medichecks, we believe that investing in proactive health measures, such as comprehensive health checks, can make a big difference in addressing these challenges. Our services help identify health issues early, enabling targeted interventions that support both employees and employers. Prioritising employee wellbeing is not just a moral obligation but a strategic business decision that can lead to better productivity, reduced absenteeism, and a healthier work culture. 💼 Investing in your team's health is an investment in your company's future. 🌟 https://lnkd.in/eXXm_gGK. #CorporateHealthbyMedichecks #CorporateHealthChecks #EmployeeHealthChecks#EmployeeWellbeing #WorkplaceWellness #diagnostics #diagnostictesting #diagnosticsasaservice #bloodtest #bloodtesting #homebloodtest #remotebloodtesting

Earlier this year it was revealed how record numbers of people leaving work due to long-term sickness is significantly impacting the UK economy. But, as this new report highlights, presenteeism can be just as costly for businesses. It underlines, once again, the crucial importance of employers prioritising investment in employee wellbeing and managing worker health effectively. Establishing a culture where staff feel able to take time off if they are unwell is key. But so too is taking proactive action to support their recovery and help them stay well at work in the first place, so they’re less likely to need to go off sick and more able to perform at their best. With poor mental health one of the biggest drivers of employee sickness and absence, providing managers with resources and training on how to better support and promote mental wellbeing among their teams is one area where organisations can make big gains. 👏 Are you seeing increased presenteeism or sickness absence in your business? What are you doing to tackle these trends? 👀 #WorkplaceWellbeing #EmployeeHealth #Presenteeism #MentalHealthAtWork #SicknessAbsence #WorkplaceProductivity #EmployeeWellness #HealthyWorkplace #InvestmentInWellbeing #CorporateHealth #WorkplaceCulture #EmployeeSupport #SickLeave #WorkplaceSickness #HealthAndProductivity #EmployeeEngagement
