When it comes to addressing obesity, the focus on lifestyle and diet overlooks the nature of the condition. Misconceptions surrounding obesity have led to a lack of awareness regarding its true causes and the significant impact it can have on individuals' lives. Glad to hear how the EASO, a leading advocate for obesity research, medicine, and community in Europe, is dedicated to reshaping the conversation around obesity at both policy and healthcare levels. #ObesityAwareness #HealthPolicy #EASO

Have we passed peak #obesity? For the first time in decades, newly released data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey shows a decline in the U.S. adult obesity rate. We may look back on this moment as the inflection point in the obesity epidemic, with new-generation weight loss medications playing a pivotal role in driving this historic shift. This article from The Financial Times puts the data into context and explores what this turning point could mean for the future of weight health. https://hubs.la/Q02TRWnp0 #ShiftTheWeight #WeightHealth #WeightWatchers #obesity #chronicdisease

🌍✨ World Obesity Atlas 2024: A Global Call to Action ✨🌍 On the eve of World Obesity Day, the World Obesity Federation unveils the annual World Obesity Atlas, offering a comprehensive analysis of obesity rates and trends worldwide. This year's Atlas not only maps out the current state but also projects the trajectory of obesity's impact on the global stage. It presents undeniable evidence that the absence of obesity care within health systems is fueling the surge in major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer and diabetes. The startling escalation in obesity rates underscores the urgent need for immediate and collective efforts from governments, healthcare professionals, and communities around the globe. “The release of the 2024 Global Atlas highlights the imperative for a paradigm shift in our approach to tackling obesity. We need to stop false tradeoffs between food and health, young and old, developed and developing country, and recognise this is a serious, global challenge that calls for multisectoral solutions and coordinated action,” stated Johanna Ralston, CEO at the World Obesity Federation. As we stand on the threshold of World Obesity Day, the Atlas serves as a critical reminder of the global scale of this challenge. It is a call to action for governments to reaffirm their commitment to tackling obesity and striving for a healthier, more equitable future for all. The time to act is now—by working together, we can help mitigate the adverse effects of obesity on individuals and societies worldwide. 🤝 #WorldObesityDay #FightObesity #HealthyFutures #EquitableAccess

Gijs Goossens #worldobesityday2024 #obesity #NUTRIM #maastrichtuniversity #MUMC+ Interview with NUTRIM Professor Gijs Goossens on the importance of World Obesity Day. Why should we talk about obesity? “Talking about obesity, explaining the complexity of this disease, may help reducing obesity stigma”. Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease that results from a complex interplay between genetic, metabolic, socio-economic, behavioral and environmental factors that override the physiological mechanisms involved in body weight regulation. Importantly, obesity acts as a gateway to many other non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer. According to current estimates, nearly 1 billion people around the world were living with obesity in 2020. That is about 1 in 7 people! Therefore, obesity and its associated health problems also have a significant economic impact on our health care system. A common misconception is that obesity is always the result of an unhealthy lifestyle, that it is the result of a lack of discipline, that it is a person’s own fault. The stigma that society attaches to obesity has a significant impact on the lives of people with obesity. Talking about obesity, explaining the complexity of this disease, may help reducing obesity stigma. Some very interesting research coming from Imperial’s School of Public Health and their collaborators, concerning increasing obesity rates. Research continues to show the important role the gut microbiome plays in the energy metabolism and weight management (see great review here: https://lnkd.in/eiGdG5rh). We are focussed on supporting and carrying out research that looks to improve our understanding of the gut microbiome and by extension human health. One in eight people in the world is now living with obesity. 🗺️ Research from Imperial Medicine's School of Public Health has found that that the total number of children, adolescents and adults worldwide living with obesity has surpassed one billion. The research, published in The Lancet, highlights that these trends, together with the declining prevalence of people who are underweight since 1990, make obesity the most common form of malnutrition in most countries. The study's senior author, #OurImperial Professor Majid Ezzati, said: "It is very concerning that the epidemic of obesity that was evident among adults in much of the world in 1990 is now mirrored in school-aged children and adolescents." According to the researchers, the findings highlight an urgent need for comprehensive policies to tackle the burden of malnutrition, including improving the accessibility and affordability of nutritious food, as well as prevention and management strategies for obesity and underweight. As CEO of ActivSport Advisory, I want to share some key takeaways and highlight the crucial role of physical activity in addressing this epidemic. I elaborate further in this week’s blog post – some key highlights below… Alarming Trends - Adult obesity rates have jumped from less than 25% in 1988 to over 40% in 2020. - Childhood obesity rates have tripled since 1980. - Significant disparities exist based on race, ethnicity, income, and geography. The Impact - Rising rates of inactivity-related chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and hypertension. - Increased healthcare costs and reduced workforce productivity. - Growing risk to national security as fewer individuals meet military physical requirements. National Strategy and Physical Activity The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health has laid out a five-pillar strategy, with "Support physical activity for all" as a key component. Recommendations: Improve food access and affordability. Integrate nutrition and health. Empower consumers to make healthier choices. Support physical activity for all. Enhance nutrition. As fitness industry professionals, we have a critical role to play: -Develop outcomes-based programs for obesity prevention and treatment. -Support individuals on obesity medications or post-bariatric surgery. -Partner with schools and community centers to expand physical activity offerings. -Create before- and after-school programs to establish healthy habits early.
