Information sharing advice for safeguarding practitioners -DfE Updated Guidance https://lnkd.in/eJ_kZgaa The document has been significantly rewritten to instill confidence in practitioners of the legal framework that supports the sharing of information for the purposes of safeguarding. The guidance is for: 1) Individuals who are directly involved in safeguarding children, including frontline practitioners, managers and senior leaders 2) Individuals and organisations that work with children, parents, carers and families, in sectors such as social care, education, health, justice and voluntary It may also be helpful for practitioners working with vulnerable adults and adults who could pose a risk to children. The Seven golden rules for sharing information (including personal information) have been updated including more clarity on the use of consent and the legal frameworks needed to support the sharing of information. The guide also discusses why consent is not usually the most appropriate lawful basis in a safeguarding context. You should also read the 10 step guide to sharing information to safeguard children https://lnkd.in/eeQqUYfe from the Information Commissioner’s Office. #childsafeguarding #childprotection #childabuse #workingtogether #informationsharing #safeguardingchildren #procedures

Safeguarding children is a critical responsibility for nurseries and early years settings. A robust safeguarding policy includes consistently logging concerns, which provides a valuable record of a child’s environment, interactions, and any signs of harm. As nurseries are often the first place where potential issues may surface, understanding the importance of logging safeguarding concerns can protect vulnerable children and help identify risks before they escalate. Statistics shared by the NSPCC recently are alarming: last year, their helpline referred 11,465 children aged five and under to local agencies due to abuse and neglect. That’s more than 30 babies and young children every day. Nurseries are in a unique position to observe the daily behaviour, health, and well-being of children. Recording concerns, even if they seem minor, can provide a crucial piece in a bigger puzzle that identifies children in danger of abuse or neglect. Accurate logging of safeguarding concerns in a nursery setting is vital. It allows for early detection, supports professional intervention, and ultimately keeps children safe. Nurseries play a pivotal role in the protection of vulnerable children, and by ensuring that all concerns are recorded and acted upon, they can help prevent abuse and neglect from escalating into tragedy. The government publishes an annual safeguarding report into serious case reviews in around January every year. Schools are inspected every 4-6 years on average. As part of this, they get a sentence stating 'safeguarding is effective'. This is no way adequate enough for the amount of work and dedication that goes into 'effective' safeguarding practices that can save children's lives. I believe safeguarding in schools, as well as local authorities, should be inspected annually by people with expertise in the area. It should be separated from Ofsted inspections. As part of the 'Beyond Ofsted' report, we argued that safeguarding is too important to be narrowed down to one sentence every few years. https://lnkd.in/eHYc2bV8 https://lnkd.in/eCVMqP3e #safeguarding #effectivepractice #childcentrededucation #childrenfirst

Safeguarding and the voluntary sector NSPCC Learning has published a learning from case reviews briefing on safeguarding in the voluntary sector. 👇 The briefing explores learning from a sample of case reviews published between 2015 and 2024. Issues identified include a lack of clarity around voluntary agencies’ safeguarding roles and responsibilities. The learning from these case reviews highlights the need for organisations in the voluntary sector to create and share clear child protection policies and procedures and build good working relationships with other agencies.
