Is the world becoming more isolationist? Recently, it would appear that world leaders are turning their backs on globalisation. Defined as a system in which business acquire international influence and start operating on an international scale, it offers benefits such as increased competition and increased foreign investment. According to the world bank, globalisation has endured two major blows in recent history, the Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Both of these events have caused the first reversal in the trend to globalisation since WW2. Geopolitics has also played a role in the shift. Increasing tensions between the US and China have led to protectionist trade policies, most recently with US president Joe Biden imposing tariff increases on $18B worth of Chinese goods. In terms of runoff effects of what seems to be de-globalisation, one that consumers would be most concerned about is inflation. In a global system, increased competition and free capital flows would allow production to be shifted to countries which were most efficient, leading to lower costs of production. In a less globalised world, it is less likely that production takes place in the cost efficient countries, leading to higher prices and costs, other factors being equal. Another impact would be a lower level of foreign investment, disproportionately affecting developing economies. With less production being offshored to these countries, there are lower levels of capital inflows to these countries, stunting their economic growth. While it can be argued that globalisation is optimal for the growth of the global economy as a whole, it is important to take into account other considerations such as the ambitions of individual countries, such as to retain jobs and investments for locals to understand why such a trend is occurring.
