Presenting our rising star of this year’s #Postgraduate Publication of the Year competition, Zixiao Zhang! Discussing her #PhDpaper, titled ‘Incorporating Directionality in Transversal-Resonator-Based Bandpass Filters With Tunable Transfer Function Characteristics’, Zixiao outlined that “Research excellence played a vital role in my approach. I ensured rigor in my methodology by performing a detailed and accurate circuit synthesis through deriving equations. I maintained validity by thoroughly comparing my calculated results with simulations using commercially available software. Additionally, I guaranteed reliability by manufacturing four prototypes and characterizing all their characteristics in the lab. We make sure that all the data and results presented are robust, reliable and contribute meaningfully to the field of RF filter designs”. Reflections on the research/product design process In this "meta" talk, we will cover the often intangible part of the research and design process in how we can be more effective in problem formulation, choosing problems to work on, devising strategies to tackle problems the right way, and how we can be more effective in communicating our results. This is the sort of talk I wish I had heard 20+ years ago when I was starting out as a junior researcher. Mini Bio: Vyas Sekar is the Tan Family Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the ECE Department at CMU. He is also co-founder and Chief Technologist at Rockfish Data, and the Chief Scientist at Conviva. His research is broadly at the intersection of networks, systems, and security. His work has been recognized with the SIGCOMM Rising Star Award, NSA Science of Security prize, the Intel Outstanding Researcher Award, the SIGCOMM Test of Time Award, and multiple best paper awards.

The webinar outlines how the use of the broad range of IP within the freely available Arm Academic Access programme combined with academic-focused reusable reference designs and tape out flows (being developed by the SoC Labs academic community) are making System on Chip projects easier to undertake by individual students and larger academic teams. The growing global SoC Labs community supports many SoC design projects, and sharing knowledge via project collaborations helps ease the design and fabrication process. SoC Labs and Arm (as part of the Semiconductor Education Alliance) are looking to help more academics and institutions develop skills and innovative SoC designs and reduce the barriers academics face. But they are missing a lot of the real-world effects, the non-idealities, that occur when they are on the physical silicon. When they graduate and go to work, it takes a longer time for them to adapt to the real-world design environment.
