[What Getting Accepted by YLI Taught Me About Those Around Me] Hi! I’m Jonathan Natasaputra, and I’m one of this year’s Young Leaders for Indonesia Foundation Awardees by McKinsey & Company. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gNcty4PU If you’ve read it, then let me just start with a quote I heard from Mas Mentri, Nadiem Makarim: “Behind numbers, are people.” When he said this, the context was when he explained the need for us to appreciate employees in workplaces because, without them, the company wouldn’t run. But for me, it meant something different. I realized that the confidence that I had in my first and second applications wasn’t purely built on personal beliefs and experiences, it also came from the people around me. I believe that the numbers that I put up were the result of the unwavering support and guidance–During my highs and lows from peers, friends, and family. It is because of these people, that I am here today. I feel that sometimes these people go underappreciated. Sometimes, we forget where we began. Sometimes, our pride gets the best of us. That is why if you’re reading this, I want you to ask yourself–Who are you, really? Do you still remember the people who believed in you even when you no longer believed in yourself? When was the last time you did something nice for them? Thank you, Young Leaders for Indonesia Foundation for the experience and the opportunity to learn, unlearn, and re-learn. "I can't make them change. And it's not my job to." I hear this all the time, whether in work or life relationships. One person is frustrated because progress stalls when the other isn’t moving. And it’s true—you can’t change someone, and it’s not your responsibility. Letting go and moving on can be the best choice. But what if you could turn things around? This is where self-leadership comes in. When you lead your own growth, you create the space to influence change in others. You understand what it takes and how to invite them on their own transformation journey. This is the skill I mastered working with the B40 community. The only reason I took it on was because I was already doing the deep inner work myself. I knew what it took to ignite that desire for change. My role was to equip them with the mindset change, right resources, celebrate every milestone, and help them anchor their achievements. Through the MAD (Mengecapi Aspirasi Diri) program, my team and I consistently met and exceeded our goals for our women participants, transforming communities. This experience strengthened my belief that everyone can change. And we can make it happen if we’re willing to do the work. Dear Linkdin family, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share an experience with you from Galgotias University, where the fresh batch of 2025-2026 has just started. During the orientation, I had the opportunity to engage with my juniors and discovered a diverse range of thoughts and perspectives. Some of them are very clear about their goals, while others are still struggling with underconfidence, confusion, and the pressure of future achievements. Reflecting on their experiences took me back to my own journey, where I felt the same uncertainties. People often compliment me on my ability to articulate my thoughts, so I decided to share my own journey with them. Here's what I conveyed: Completed a certificate program in Communication and Leadership Skills from Freedom English Academy (FEA) during my 12th class. The program started in April, on very sunny days. Our batch included students ranging from 5 to 20 years old, and the faculty treated us all equally, without any junior or senior distinctions. Miss Haokip, the best person I met during my studies, played a significant role in my growth. This program helped me develop a strong foundation in key areas such as effective communication, both verbal and written, and improved my presentation skills, allowing me to confidently convey ideas in front of an audience. I also honed my time management abilities, ensuring efficient task completion within deadlines. Additionally, I gained valuable experience in group discussions, learning to collaborate and share ideas while sharpening my analytical thinking to approach problems critically and strategically. Now, I convey to my juniors that if you have the confidence to share your thoughts, you can effectively and efficiently prove your point. Consistency in these efforts is essential for success.

He asked, why UN Secretary-General... . . . As a child, I always admired specific individuals who served as mentors to me. It was their representation as individuals and their influence and impact in their fields that drew me to them. One such mentor was Kofi Annan. I remember writing in my schoolbook that I wanted to be a UN Secretary-General. When my dad saw it, he was impressed and asked why. I told him I read about Kofi Anan and realized he was a Ghanaian, and to me, a Ghanaian holding such a prestigious position meant a lot. I grew up in an environment with limited opportunities to meet admired individuals, but I still understood the importance of mentorship at an early age and how it could ultimately impact my life. I actively sought mentors, both from afar and nearby. Eventually, after my graduate internship, I found a great mentor in Otuo-Akyampong Boakye. Through him, I learned a great deal. 𝗦𝗼 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗜 𝗮𝘀𝗸, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿? Firstly, it's essential to have a reasonable motivation. Seeking mentorship should not be solely based on superficial reasons but on tangible benefits such as: 📍 Skill Development: A mentor can provide personalized guidance for enhancing specific skills or acquiring new ones. 📍Career Advancement: Mentors offer insights into career paths, help navigate challenges, and guide long-term career goals. 📍Networking Opportunities: They can introduce you to valuable connections and collaborations. 📍Personal Growth: Mentors act as sounding boards, offer feedback, and foster a growth mindset. 📍Industry Insights: Gain a deeper understanding of your field from experienced mentors. 📍Leadership Development: Guidance on leadership skills and decision-making. 📍Accountability: Keep you focused on goals and actions. 📍Work-Life Balance: Advice on managing stress and prioritizing well-being. Primarily, seeking mentorship should align with your goals and areas of growth. [How did I get through high school? How do I come back to contribute?] As an introvert, I used to think that at least I shouldn't be someone who closes off social life. It's really hard to do social activities with lots of people, it really drains my energy. Many problems arise, but also many learnings come. I, really changed in interpersonal skills in high school. With the many organizations, competitions, and activities that I do, with the many important people and great colleagues I meet, I open up many insights, I learn many things. I used to be a "really science" person, but in fact my business spirit won the long journey ahead. I chose to be involved in the business world because I consider that with this I can have "more wealth", wealth in the context of knowledge that suits my abilities and interests, wealth in the context of helping others, wealth in the context of professional networks, not forgetting in the financial context. Meeting and interacting with all the great students in Indonesia, also with very inspiring practitioners and academics, gave me lots of new thoughts about the world and myself. By meeting lots of people, I broke through the glass ceiling that limited my horizons, I learned how people behave, how I can lead them, and how I manage a team I never knew before. By sharing this, I hope it can remind me that after this I must be more, more than everything I achieved and had a year ago.
