When I was made a manager for the first time, my grandad took me aside and gave me my first leadership lesson: It’s not about me any more. It’s about helping others to be as good as me. And even better if they have it in themselves. It’s about us achieving what I would want to achieve for myself. Is me nurturing them and learning together how to work as a team. How to execute as a team. How to win as a team. How to celebrate together. Managing others is very tricky if you don’t have leadership skills. It is a burden. So start improving your leadership skills because you need them, even if you don’t become a manager. You don’t need to have leadership skills to lead, but you do need them to be a (good) manager.
