Did you know? German, Frisian, English, and Dutch are very closely related. That's because they share a common ancestor: Proto-Germanic. You can see and hear that very nicely in this video by two Northern German friends — one from Hamburg, one from East Frisia. They speak "Plattdeutsch" (Low German) here, though both of them can also speak High German. (I don't speak Low German, but I can understand most of it with the subtitles.) Words I thought were interesting: - "ik" (EN: "I" / DE: "ich") - "dat" (EN: "that" / DE: "das") - "wi" (EN: "we" / DE: "wir") - "hebben" (EN: "have" / DE: "haben") - "een" (EN: "one" / DE: "eins") - "twee" (EN: "two" / DE: "zwei") - "heet" (EN: "hot" / DE: "heiß") - "sööt" (EN: "sweet" / DE: "süß ") - "maken" (EN: "make" / DE: "machen") - "Water" (EN: "water" / DE: "Wasser") - "Koppke" (EN: "cup" / DE: "Tasse" - different in German!) Also: tea isn't just a British thing! 🍵 East Frisians have a special tea ceremony with strong black tea, "kluntjes" (hard, crystallised sugar), cream, and (sometimes) rum. Important: you're not meant to stir it. (Demonstrated in the video). My essay in de Gids (in Dutch). De Gids is the oldest Dutch literary periodical still published today, founded in 1837: The Essay draws on Graeber/Wengrow's "The Dawn of Everything", and Wolfram's work on the theory of everything, to speculate how a we might explore for a generative algorithm of the organisation forms of human societies. The point is that historically there are more stable forms than are the object of our current political narratives, but also that not all utopias are stable. Bounding the ensemble of stable societies would be both liberating, because it would show that there are many, and also disciplining as we could eliminate those that are pointless to pursue.
