Is going to university a worthwhile investment? 💸 Depends on the country, but will keep this in context of the UK. Last week I was on holiday with a close friend. He didn't go to university. After leaving college, he actually worked as a car mechanic. Fast forward to his most recent role and he was a Senior Engineer at a FTSE 100 company, managing international improvement projects. The role normally requires an Industrial Engineering degree, but he quickly worked his way up through the organisation thanks to his practical experience and aptitude toward problem solving. This week his story stimulated a few of my conversations with Evocon Partners. You won't be shocked to hear that they like to recruit Engineers with real world experience over academics. With the present 'skilled worker shortage' in the UK, it seems that even a vocational degree like Engineering may not be delivering value on the £50,000+ investment. More companies are dropping the requirement for a degree level education and from the comments I heard this week, actually prefer it. Get ready for the pitch..... If finding new skilled workers for production is a problem. Then capitalising on existing resources is absolutely essential. ‘Learn the things that they don’t teach you at college.’ It’s always great to have customer’s apprentices visiting the workshops. Here they get to see the things that aren’t taught at college. These three apprentices are getting an appreciation of electric motor failures and what’s done to put them right. Today, meet Salutatorian Landon Doty of the WECA Utah Commercial Electrical Apprenticeship Class of 2024. He works for WECA Utah Founding Member Contractor Hunt Electric, Inc. "Having gone to other schools first, I can confidently say that I would love to have started from the beginning with WECA," says Landon. "We discussed some of the curriculum that my class didn't get to cover elsewhere, and some of the material that we did get to cover at WECA...I can only imagine how much better it would be to have gone through WECA sooner." "WECA is fun. Having many more labs than previous schools was a treat. WECA also gave me access to many concepts, products, and scenarios that I had never seen until it was required of me. I can now more confidently approach numerous uncommon tasks. I have spent many hours being moved around with tasks and learning new ways of approaching tasks. Learning to install is important, but having the chance to learn how to learn has been greatly beneficial," continues Landon. Congratulations, Landon! Pendle councillors are calling for action to protect advanced engineering skills and develop future businesses in east Lancashire. The Rolls Royce Bankfield site in Barnoldswick is being downsized, but the global aerospace sector continues to grow and diversify, with developments in areas like artificial intelligence, electric propulsion, and new materials. Lib-Dem councillors Mick Strickland and David Hartley are urging the council to convene a meeting of interested parties to pursue new opportunities in renewable energy technologies that complement the existing engineering base. They note the historical significance of Rolls Royce in Barnoldswick and the impact of its apprenticeship program. Despite the downsizing, Pendle has around 3,000 small and medium-sized firms supporting engineering excellence. Councillors across party lines agree that it's crucial to retain and develop these specialized skills, with a focus on green technologies. They aim to work with the new MP, Jonathan Hinder, to attract innovative businesses to the area. As the aerospace sector is projected to grow from $328 billion to $430 billion by 2025, Pendle has an opportunity to harness its engineering expertise and become a hub for advanced manufacturing once again.
