Leadership requires a lot of energy - but that energy comes - and can come - in many forms. It also needs to be kept ‘topped up’ and deployed with emotionally intelligent and intentional impact. I really enjoyed talking about this topic with Larissa Harrison the Group HRD of Babcock International recently. She’s an energetic leader with insightful thoughts on the topic! “Energy is a very dynamic thing so it’s important that leaders are not just aware of their own energy, but of other people’s too. Just after the start of this century, the founders and directors of LeaderShape Global embarked on a mission to develop a development journey that would help leaders become the best leaders they could be in an ever faster changing and unpredictable world. By 2010 we were referring to them as Transpersonal Leaders, leaders that operate beyond their ego and for the greater good. If we look back just over the first quarter of this century we can observe huge changes, especially in terms of communication, globalisation, technology and social change. We have also witnessed the unpredictability of war and pestilence, and most of all, climate change. These changes are becoming more volatile. To navigate the next critical stages in the history of the world and to ensure our planet regenerates, we need a different kind of leader, Transpersonal Leaders. If we look back on human history, the vast majority of recorded leaders have acted out of self interest or an ideology. This needs to change for a sustainable future. Leaders need to be more human and planet centric. The role of LeaderShape Global is to enable and support the development of leaders that can succeed in this complex world where purpose precedes profit. The first step is for leaders to become really aware of themselves and the world around them, and then to develop their emotional intelligence. With this foundation leaders can then learn how to develop a range of leadership styles, when to use them and how to create ethical, performance-enhancing cultures. This requires leaders to bring their values to full consciousness in all they do, and all the decisions they take. They realise and promote that personal learning and development is life long. I've been posting about #consciousleadership recently, observing the shrinking of its scope from being good for the world to being good for the few we lead. For me, conscious leadership is about having ever more awareness of our thoughts and actions and their impact on both those we lead AND the world at large—as well as the ability to shift our thoughts and actions to empower and ennoble ourselves and others to do more purposeful work. But the logic of advanced capitalism seems to have made the focus of conscious leadership, and even #servantleadership, limited to our impact on our team members—leaving unchallenged the impact of our leadership decisions—and so products and business models—on users, customers, suppliers, society, ecosystems etc. This is really worrying for me, as it gives antisocial and nature-destroying behaviors a veneer of legitimacy because even though we may be running business models that are causing ill-health and existential risk, we're being respectful and empowering to the people we lead. It is also interesting that I've seen no/few posts on conscious leadership talk about how one aspect of it should be working to reduce stress and overloaded workloads on our teams and ensure all whom we lead have dignified roles, healthy work conditions, and respectful pay packages.
