Always good to give evidence with others in the sector at the Parliament as the Housing Bill goes under the microscope. I think most provisions in the Bill have industry support but a rent control regime that weakens supply and availability of rental property is what we need to avoid. As we all state clearly in the session, that needs to change or the housing crisis/emergency in Scotland will worsen.
Pleased to be giving evidence today to the Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee of the Scottish Parliament, stressing that landlords are selling up and from recent research of our members, 1 in 10 respondents told us that their let properties are no longer financially viable. Looking forward to our up coming meeting with Paul McLennan focussing on our concerns about the Housing Bill. https://lnkd.in/eY6pdseC Pleased to be giving evidence alongside: Timothy Douglas Anna Gardiner Robin Blacklock Cedric Bucher & John Boyle

Despite the BC NDP's efforts to improve housing affordability, significant challenges remain. Andrey Pavlov, professor of finance, highlights that more comprehensive actions are needed to address the root causes of the crisis. Speaking to BIV News, Pavlov explained that achieving the federal goal of building 3.9 million homes by 2031 would require at least $2 trillion for construction costs, not including land and infrastructure. "A first step would be to eliminate the excessive regulation, taxes, and red tape that increase the cost and risk of housing investment," Pavlov said. While some progress has been made, Pavlov stresses that long-term solutions require broad reforms to improve affordability and access across the province.
