As many people are heading to #NYC for #UNGA2024 and side events, including the NYC #ClimateWeek, we hope to see more commitments and actions towards ending #women’s #energypoverty. We are inspired by this #TedTalk by Sheila Oparaocha which highlights how #women are the key to #cleanenergytransition and how it is urgently important to address women’s energy poverty. With only 15% of the energy workforce made up of women, the policies developed in this space often fail to address the specific needs of women, resulting in gender-blind approaches. These policies overlook the fact that women, especially those in rural or impoverished areas, are the most vulnerable to energy poverty but also the most capable of being agents of change. Oparaocha underscores the importance of #empoweringwomen in the energy transition. #Womenentrepreneurs already provide #renewableenergy services to 21 million consumers, showcasing their ability to create tangible results. She calls for grassroots groups to be supported and transformed into associations that can influence #policy and the political landscape. We at ShEquity recognize this fact, which is why we invested in WidEnergy Africa Ltd (a gender-smart company founded by Liliane Munezero Ndabaneze Chabuka) and also look forward to investing in more climate related businesses that are #gendersmart. Oparaocha’s Ted Talk highlights the urgent need to acknowledge intersection between gender and climate. What does #EnergyPoverty look like? For more than 2 billion people around the world, it's not having access to clean stoves and fuels for cooking daily meals. Sheila Oparaocha, Director of ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, spoke on the TED Conferences stage about how we need to think differently about #energy transitions and leaving no one behind. Yesterday, I had the privilege of participating in a live panel discussion on promoting access to clean energy organised by Civil Society Network on Climate Change. I emphasized the importance of considering women's specific energy needs in rural electrification programs. We must recognize the disproportionate impact of energy poverty on women and harness the transformative power of electricity to promote women's economic empowerment. #EnergyAccess #WomenEmpowerment #SustainableEnergy"

I’m excited to share my TED Talk, where I dive into the critical issue of energy poverty impacting 2.4 billion people who lack access to electricity and clean cooking fuels. The harsh reality of women's energy poverty isn’t getting the attention it deserves in global discussions on sustainable development and climate change. In my talk, I urge us to rethink and reshape our approach to energy access and development. There is a crucial oversight in the net zero 2050 narrative: it assumes that everyone simply needs cleaner alternatives while ignoring the fact that one in three people still lacks any form of modern energy. Join me in advocating for an inclusive energy transition that addresses these disparities and amplifies marginalized voices. 🌎 Let’s support a vision of an energy future where no one is left behind. 📺 Watch here: https://lnkd.in/eRiCGjvV ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy Hivos #EnergyPoverty #InclusiveEnergy #CleanEnergy #ClimateAction #EnergyAccess #TEDTalk #EnergyTransition

In the second of our five-part series by Jerome Gessaroli, he writes about reducing greenhouse gas emissions is tied to energy use, and energy drives economic prosperity. Developing nations face unique challenges: as they improve living standards, energy demands surge—often relying on coal. Meanwhile, developed nations shift to green energy yet grapple with rising AI data center power needs. Tackling climate change requires stronger collaboration and support across borders. #climateaction #energytransition

Guiding Principle 3 of the United Nations "Resourcing the Energy Transition" report states: "Justice and equity must underpin mineral value chains." For too long, the benefits and burdens of mineral extraction have been unevenly distributed, often disadvantaging vulnerable communities. As we accelerate the energy transition, we have a unique opportunity to correct these injustices. By ensuring fair treatment, legal redress, and meaningful participation in decision-making processes, we can make sure that no one is left behind. This includes promoting decent work, gender equity, and supporting artisanal and small-scale miners. Read full report: https://lnkd.in/eHvNgw_8

In the quest to ensure universal energy access, we often hear about the ‘leave no one behind’ principle. But on this #InternationalDayofLight, we are being very specific. We must not leave anyone in the dark! The transformative impact of light in all aspects of life cannot be gainsaid. Light or electricity is at the centre of the world’s innovations, prosperity and societal advancement and although it has not yet been recognized as such, the reality is, energy access is a fundamental human right. Simply put, light is the lifeline of all modern society. It is for this reason that we remain committed to efforts towards accelerating access to clean, affordable energy for all, particularly in unserved and underserved communities. We are striving to illuminate a brighter future for everyone and by so doing, helping lift millions of people out of poverty. #FinancingEnergyProsperity #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #SustainableEnergy #minigrid #offgridsolar #energyaccess #SustainableDevelopment #SolarPower #SolarEnergy #SolarPanels

Water is Life - No to the Channel project! As 90% of Manitobas First Nations have experienced significant cumulative impacts and unmanageable adverse affects as a result of Manitoba Hydro’s pursuit to maximize electricity supply for domestic and export to their USA customers. Premier Wab Kinew knows the hydro projects have resulted in devastation to First Nations economies, loss of access and use of lands and resources, water quality and safe drinking water that is a major issue and concern of our communities. Tataskweyak Creek Nation will be building a 40 km water pipeline to secure treatable water source that will provide water for immediate relief. Many other First Nations like York Landing First Nation and many more will have to do the same for the preservation of their membership and protection of future generations. With Manitoba Hydro $25 Billion dollars in debt with the Mb government not to far behind at $8 Billion in debt. A First Nation led initiative for a Smart and Renewable Energy opportunities could be a source for long term sustainable revenues and independence that our First Nations have been asking to be a part of! Manitoba and Manitoba hydro could benefit by providing power purchase agreements to First Nations to match or double the current Mb Hydro inventory of 6.1 GHz or 6100 mw of electricity. Through First Nation partnerships there will be a better understanding of the future relationship going forward - that is inclusive, sincere and respectful. This won’t change the past, but will offer a much better alternative to the havoc and destruction that electricity generation projects have created through the raping and pillaging of our First Nation citizens, traditional activity and pursuits, communities lands and stinking up our local environment. Water is sacred, it provides safety, security and protection for today and tomorrow for the future of our children, grandchildren and the 7 generations yet to come!
