Our new sustainability publication, Unwavering focus on the big picture, is an evolving document highlighting our work, approach and understanding of pertinent issues in sustainable design and innovation. The publication is organised into thematic chapters – Design efficiency, Whole life carbon, Social value and Health + wellbeing – alongside information about our practice’s ambitions as well as research and innovation projects. The content is not an exhaustive catalogue of our work in this field, as we are progressing solutions and engaging in new ways every day to help push our industry forward. Instead, the publication provides our collaborators with a summary of how we critically apply our inventive, multi-layered approach and how this results in designs that fundamentally rethink how we live, learn, work, and play. This detailed catalogue sits back-to-back with our Sustainability Charter, further illustrating the key principles that shape our work and thinking. 🌱 Sustainability: A Journey, Not a Destination Studying Social Design and Sustainable Innovations has taught me one essential truth: sustainability is complex, challenging, and often imperfect. As much as we aim for 100% sustainability, real-world constraints make it difficult to achieve. However, what truly matters is intent and incremental progress. Every step a company takes toward being more sustainable—whether it's reducing waste, improving processes, or sourcing responsibly—contributes to a greater collective impact. As designers, it’s crucial to understand this nuance. Instead of striving for perfection, we can encourage organizations to aim for "better" rather than "ideal." By embracing these efforts, we foster a culture of innovation, transparency, and continuous improvement. 💡 Takeaway: Let’s challenge ourselves to approach sustainability not as a finish line but as a mindset—celebrating the small victories while pushing for bigger ones. What are your thoughts on balancing ambition with realism in sustainable design? Let’s discuss. image by: Beckers Sustainability Index (BSI) #SustainableDesign #SocialInnovation #DesignEthics #SustainabilityJourney #IncrementalChange

As we progressed through more than half of the Sustainable Foundations Report, our attention turned to forecasting. We moved from understanding the current situation to predicting what might happen in the future, and a crucial step in this process emerged – the gap. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), is a term that covers a wide range of factors related to sustainability and responsible business practices. Just by looking around, it's clear that the industry is increasingly focusing on sustainability. The landscape shift of gleaming glass into lush green began well before stringent policies came into play. The concept of E Upgrade. Currently, only 61% of office buildings have received a green certification. But considering this is a voluntary/non-binding measure, it's obvious that there's strong interest in the market for sustainability. Developers have, perhaps subconsciously, been aligning with these standards for a competitive edge over the past decade. However, a lingering knowledge gap in compliance hinders structures from attaining certification. Amidst ongoing retrofitting and renovations with evolving materials, we introduced the term E Upgrade - the delta between existing costs and the minimum required for certification. Then the intriguing part unfolds; the break-even period and other benefits take center stage. We discuss this in detail in our report, and the potential for this approach is huge. If you haven't had a chance to read the report yet, I highly recommend it. Time to thank ever supportive mentors (also awesome research co-authors) Vimal Nadar, Suryaneel Das, Shreeda Goel. Thanking Sambit Mahapatra for his on-time inputs and mind-opening perspectives on sustainability.

Think sustainably, act sustainably, and then verify the results. These three principles are the founding pillars of all our work at Secto Design. In recent years, we have invested a significant amount of time and resources in working more sustainably and examining the results of our efforts. Now, we can see the full environmental impact of our products and production, thanks to the thorough Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted over the past two years.
