WAYMO -- WAYCOOL or GHOST RIDER? If you preside in San Francisco, Santa Monica or Phoenix you are now seeing driverless Waymo taxies making their way through town on an ever-increasing basis. The network is expanding, and I can honestly say that in the Santa Monica / West Los Angeles area I have not driven anywhere in the last two months without seeing one of them on the road every time. In fact, sometimes they are so prevalent that there might be three in a row waiting at a stop light. It still is kind of spooky seeing cars moving around with no driver, or anyone for that matter, in the front seat. It's not exactly the same as the Headless Horseman but it does conjure up that image in my imagination. I have not taken a ride in one, but several family members have and report their satisfaction. Waymo is a division of Alphabet (GOOGL). I have not seen any visible evidence of General Motors (GM) Cruise vehicles which I understand are still being road tested, while Tesla (TSLA) has been projecting their autonomous vehicle vision for some time. For now, Tesla seems to be behind but that could change quickly. GM is likely to use their own branded vehicles, and it would seem that Tesla will likely do the same. However, Waymo technology could be outfitted on any cars. That seems like a big advantage, staying out of the car business and just being like the "Intel/Microsoft" inside personal computers which is a much higher margin business. There has been a lot of noise in the business journals and chat rooms about a Waymo initial public offering but nothing from Alphabet itself. They recently concluded a $5.6 billion investment round; see TechCrunch post below. The autonomous race is on, and it will be expanding rapidly from here on out. I just wonder if we will ever see an autonomous police vehicle stop a wayward autonomous taxi and write it up for some violation as yet unknown. Will traffic school be an option? #waymo, #autonomousvehicles, #selfdrivingcars, #GM, #Generalmotors, #tesla, #Investing, #business,

Fully autonomous cars have long seemed like an ever postponed promise. A bit like Elon Musk's flexible timelines. But, then, most of the time in the end #Musk delivers. It seems that it might also be the case for autonomous cars. After almost 15 years in the making, #Waymo today delivers 100,000 rides per week. That makes for a $100M business. Only in 4 cities: San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin. With a market share of less than 2%. The potential is just INSANE. No wonder Waymo just raised $5.6Bn, as it is poised to be a natural winner in a $230Bn worldwide market growing at 13%/y. https://lnkd.in/eRXwtuaq

If you want a swiftly generated report about a startup you're interested in, give our AI Copilot a try. Attached is a link to a startup report of Waymo that our Copilot generated in a few minutes. Although not a startup anymore, it is Alphabet Inc.'s privately owned autonomous mobility subsidiary. The only input we gave the Copilot was Waymo's website address. Thereafter, it analyzed all outstanding data, from the website and other internet sources. It even provides a comparison matrix over competitors. Soon, customers of Sircular will also be able to subscribe to future scenarios (like autonomous mobility in this case) and automatically receive reports of prospective startup investments. https://lnkd.in/dc_zkFA7

Firms working on self-driving technology are attracting fresh investments as the technology continues to scale and advance and gains further acceptance from commuters. On Friday, Waymo announced that it closed an oversubscribed investment round of $5.6 billion, led by Alphabet. The company is looking to expand its presence in cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, among others. "Through our expanded partnership with Uber in Austin and Atlanta, we’ll begin to serve riders in those cities in 2025. To create an even more useful experience, we've begun fully autonomous freeway operations in Phoenix and San Francisco," said Waymo in a press note. China's WeRide has also raised about $440.5 million from its U.S. initial public offering. The company offered about 7.74 million American depositary shares priced between $15.50 and $18.50 apiece. WeRide's backers included Alliance Ventures, the venture capital fund of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, and auto parts maker Robert Bosch GmbH, among others. Starting its operations in 2017, WeRide is present in about 30 cities in seven countries. Additionally, another Chinese autonomous vehicle upstart called Pony AI has filed for an initial public offering on the Nasdaq. The company was founded in 2016 with operations in Silicon Valley, Beijing, and Guangzhou. In an SEC filing, the company said it operates a fleet of over 250 robotaxis, which has accumulated over 33.5 million kilometers of autonomous driving mileage, including over 3.9 million kilometers of driverless mileage. Last week, Elon Musk-run Tesla threw its hat in the ring as well, introducing his version of autonomous taxis called CyberCab. Ark Invest's Tasha Keeney noted that their research indicates that Tesla is likely to launch a full-scale robotaxi network in 2025 or 2026. This is Waymo, a startup from Mountain View, California, that has raised more than $5.7 billion to disrupt transportation with autonomous vehicle technology. This is how they did it and their plans moving forward: 1. The founder, Sebastian Thrun, had the idea for Waymo when he was involved in Google's autonomous car project, initially known as Google's Self-Driving Car Project. Thrun had previously worked at Stanford University and co-invented Google Street View. His first funding round was $2.25 billion to scale the autonomous vehicle business. 2. The first prototype was unveiled in 2009, just a year after the project started. 3. They raised $2.5 billion more in 2021, and now they have hundreds of autonomous cars operating in San Francisco, Phoenix, and other cities. 4. The company’s next objectives include scaling their robotaxi service across additional U.S. cities and expanding their commercial services. 5. Waymo generated around $1 billion in revenue by 2020 and is now valued at approximately $30 billion. ### Investors: Waymo has attracted investments from prominent firms, including: - Alphabet, the parent company of Google (the main backer). - Temasek Holdings, a Singapore-based sovereign wealth fund. - Tiger Global Management, a New York-based venture capital firm. - Andreessen Horowitz, a major venture capital firm. - AutoNation, an automotive retail giant.
