"In Oklahoma, more elections are decided between April 1 and the end of June than ever make it to November. Besides regular school and municipal elections, April of even-numbered years brings filing for state and federal offices. A large share of those races — 50 of 133 this year — end without ever really starting, won by unopposed candidates. Of the rest, many go no further than the June party primaries. Thirty-four seats, including the 3rd Congressional District, will be decided by primaries this year because the only candidates are from the same party." The European Parliament published the first preliminary results of the European Parliamentary elections, which took place last week across EU countries. Provisional results indicate: 📍The center-right EPP remains the political group with most seats 📍The left-wing S&D remains the second group with most seats 📍The liberal Renew and the Greens recorded significant losses 📍The far-right parties made political gains by winning new seats (around +20 each) Overall, it is expected that the center-right, liberal and socialist groups will be able to form a ruling coalition for the next legislature. https://bit.ly/3yXetab #EU #democracy #euelections2024

Summer 2024. 2 elections. Which result is indicative of a flawed democracy? In one, a party won 34% of the votes. It was rewarded with a “landslide win” and 64% of the seats in parliament. In the other, a party won 37% of the votes. Its reward? A mere 24% of the parliamentary seats are available, and a continued spell in opposition. In my latest piece for Project Syndicate, I assess the UK and French elections and what they tell us about the democratic institutions of those two nations. https://buff.ly/3WJQGUw #ProjectSyndicate #elections #democracy

Critical to democracy, having a VOTE that counts and the peaceful transfer of power. In liberal democracies, the voters can boot the “rascals” out or not vote the “rascals” in. If the “rascal” does not win, it does not mean the vote was rigged it means the voters decided! Democracies have vocal, dynamic and often times unpredictable elections. In autocracies, the autocrat always “surprisingly” wins. Their elections are typically subdued and predictable. The best way to ensure democracy remains strong, speak-up, be counted and VOTE! https://lnkd.in/gZPYHrgs

While the U.S. elections took centre stage this past week, understanding the structured process that formally determines the next President is essential. With over 144 million votes cast during the 2024 elections, the journey from ballots to inauguration involves several critical steps. Each state’s voters select electors, who then cast their votes within the 538-member Electoral College. The Congress meets on January 6 to officially count these votes, presided over by the Vice President, before certifying the outcome. The President-elect is then inaugurated on January 20, marking the official start of the new administration.
