Spiritual Bypass The Journey Within: The Progressive and Direct Paths to Enlightenment In the past time, in the realm of spiritual seekers, there was a well-trodden path known as the Progressive Path. This journey required aspirants to dedicate decades to purifying their minds and bodies.  Only after such rigorous preparation where they considered ready to embark on the quest for their true nature. The process was slow and meticulous, ensuring each seeker was fortified against the challenges of deeper spiritual insights. However, in the early 20th century, a remarkable shift occurred. Three enlightened sages from India—Ramana Maharshi, Atmananda Krishna Menon, and Nisargadatta Maharaj—emerged with a revolutionary perspective. They resurrected an ancient but often overlooked path: the Direct Path. These sages declared that it wasn’t necessary to undergo extensive purification of the mind and body before seeking one's true nature.  Instead, they proposed that individuals could immediately dive into their core being, regardless of their current state—be it anxious, depressed, or troubled. The Direct Path suggested that the awareness witnessing these experiences was the key to enlightenment. Critics of this approach coined the term "spiritual bypass," arguing that it allowed individuals to evade confronting their psychological and emotional issues. They feared that this could lead to an incomplete and superficial realization, where the ego used spirituality as an escape mechanism. Yet, the sages of the Direct Path emphasized a critical phase often misunderstood. After the initial recognition of one's true nature, there was an essential return to address and realign one's experiences, thoughts, and emotions.  This was not avoidance but a sequence: first, recognizing the ever-present awareness, and then integrating this understanding into daily life. This holistic approach ensured that while the seekers might bypass the content of their experience initially, they would eventually confront and heal these aspects from a place of deeper awareness love, peace and compassion. The direct path offered immediate access to one’s true nature, but it also called for subsequent inner work to harmonize all aspects of one's life with this profound realization. In the end, the spiritual journey, whether progressive or direct, was about coming home to oneself. The Direct Path taught that our true nature was always available, shining through every experience, ready to be realized and integrated into the fullness of life!

Rebirth or reincarnation aka पुनर्जन्मन् (Punarjanman) is another profound understanding that is often interconnected with कर्म (karma). It strongly suggests that after death, the soul, spirit and consciousness of a ( two-legged one aka) individual can take on a new physical form and continue its journey through multiple lifetimes until the समाधि (Samādhi), aka enlightenment is not reached. The circumstances of each and every rebirth are thought to be influenced by the accumulated कर्म (karma) from past lives. The purpose and meaning of this apparently endless cyclical process of rebirth and कर्म (karma) is often seen as an opportunity, a possibility for spiritual growth and the eventual मोक्ष (Moksha, Mokśa )or मुक्ति (Mukti) aka liberation or release from suffering and pain. Attaining समाधि (Samādhi), aka enlightenment or complete awakening, is viewed as the ultimate goal, representing a state of totally expanded consciousness, absolute wisdom, and complete liberation from संसार (Saṃsāra), aka the cycle of birth समाधि (Samādhi), aka enlightenment or complete awakening, is considered the highest state of consciousness and is often described as a state of total ecstasy, and bliss. It is characterised by a complete cessation of mental-emotional activities and a deepest sense of oneness with the object of meditation or/and transcendental reality, the universal consciousness. One becomes, after the experience, fully present and aware, with heightened perception and clarity and acuity. In this state, the mind-brain is totally free from distractions and fluctuations, and there is a complete, profound sense of joyful calm, peace, tranquility, love, rapture, beatitude, and total inner harmony.
