Higher education’s tech model makes it hard to protect and Moody’s agrees, rating the sector at “high risk” for cyber threats in 2024. Many institutions operate with fragmented systems and diverse user groups, which foster innovation but also create vulnerabilities. It’s clear the status quo isn’t sustainable. Leadership needs to prioritize security, invest strategically, and build awareness across campuses to safeguard institutions and their missions. Cyber risk isn’t just an IT issue...it’s an institutional one. For us in tech trying to secure education....this is the cross we bear. #HigherEd #Cybersecurity #DigitalInnovation https://lnkd.in/gyXWRnYn

🚨 Education sector faces 'high' cyber risk in 2024, says Moody's Ratings's The digital transformation of education has a dark side. Moody's just elevated the education sector's cyber risk from moderate to high for 2024. Why? Weak defenses and growing digitization. Key findings: • Education owns $356 billion of the $23.2 trillion high-risk debt across sectors • Ransomware attacks in education are among the highest reported • Cyber incident costs have more than tripled in the past year What does this mean for educational institutions? 1. Urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures 2. Potential financial strain due to cyber incidents 3. Increased vulnerability of student and faculty data The silver lining? The FCC's new $200 million cybersecurity pilot program for schools and libraries. However, with $3.7 billion in requests, the demand far outweighs the support. Seemingly another high profile cyber attack, what doesn't get as much headline space are the smaller businesses often hit by these attacks at a much higher frequency. Not only can a sustained cyber attack cost your business in the short term to resolve, the reputational harm can be much more difficult to recover from . IT security is clearly worth investing in but often these attacks succeed because of human error on the part of the affected business, reach out to discuss how cyber insurance can help your business survive such an event [email protected]. #cyber, #irishSME, #business

The impact of stealing students' data extends beyond immediate financial or academic consequences and can have long-lasting effects on individuals and institutions alike. We're dealing with a vast number of students whose credit reports are essentially pristine which makes them the prime target for identity theft. It is important to recognise that the stress of exams, coupled with the added emotional impact of a data breach, can significantly affect students' ability to concentrate on their academic responsibilities. This additional emotional burden may exacerbate existing challenges and hinder their focus on the tasks at hand and be an additional impact on home-life . It crucial to provide support and resources to help students cope with these stressors effectively, ensuring that their educational experience remains as uninterrupted as possible despite the challenges they may face. The University of Winnipeg's current cyber posture, as reflected in the BreachAware® report (https://lnkd.in/eNG9xfp4), highlights an opportunity for proactive measures. While it notes over 4,000 compromised accounts across 146 third-party breaches, addressing this issue presents a manageable task. By thoroughly researching and mitigating this data, the university can effectively assess and minimise potential risks to both students and the institution. This proactive approach aligns with best practices and ensures that the University of Winnipeg maintains a secure cyber environment, comparable to other institutions of similar size. #protectyourprivacy #education #wellbeing #cybersecurity #cybersecurityawareness https://lnkd.in/en_Mqfmt
