Musings on Pricing for Sustainable Healthcare Predictable Pricing: A Necessity I’ve been thinking about Siobhán Gibney Gomis' great short post a couple days ago, and one of the points she made about pricing resonated with me: “Make it predictable. It’s hard for an organization to budget for a solution whose bill could fluctuate significantly month to month.” I’ve worked in public companies, so I get that they need to show predictable management of expenses, and it’s really tough, grueling to explain fluctuating expenses. The Graduation Promise: A New Approach? I posted a couple weeks ago about our graduation promise, and the concept of reducing payments when members reach certain pre-defined health milestones. Here’s how it could look: Pre-Graduation: A fixed rate while getting to self-efficacy Post-Graduation: Reduced rates reflect their decreased need for intensive support. Both always tied to performance guarantees to ensure quality. Challenges/Complexities Of course, there’s a lot more to it – it would mean setting an appropriate baseline before, modeling what savings should be over time. And yes, I understand that some of the issues here are complex because of co-morbidities and members that switch plans or employers. But, continuing the status quo means spiraling costs and worsening health outcomes. What are your thoughts on ways to resolve this? How do we balance the need for predictable expenses with the very real need to remove the existing PMPM model as it is defined now?
Good food for thought...
